I've never been more proud.

This DU thread, which currently has 31 recommendations (5 is the threshold to appear on the page of "greatest" posts of the day), celebrates the implication that Obama specifically had Palin in mind with his "lipstick on a pig" comment. Several other threads avidly deny that he meant it that way.

It is a well-worn phrase, and I have no way of knowing whether he meant it to refer to Palin, but after her "lipstick/hockey mom/pitbull" comment it's a poor choice of wording at very best. But, heck, it's just words.

We've just been discussing this elsewhere and noting, with some chagrin, that the repubs are already rushing to Palin's side in support.

Oh. my. freaking. god.

It's just no fun to be a democrat.

Obama doesn't get it.

wasabi's picture

That is a well worn saying.

Sarah Palin does not own the word "lipstick".

Here is a McCain quote from 2007...

"While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal."

Enough fake outrage.

DU is a wasteland, and quite embarrasing. I'm wondering if they really are Democrats or just a bunch of rat-fuckers.

I was referring to fake outrage from the McCain camp. They are the one's who apparently forgot that McCain used the same line just a year earlier on Senator Clinton.

I'm not buying it either.

But Obama has stepped on another landmine.

The repubs are making a killing.

video so folks can judge for themselves.

Obama seems a bit off his game there, so in trying to be fair, I don't think he meant Palin, he meant McCain's policies, but the crowd seems to have recognized the implication even if he didn't.

Which means that meant to or not, he's writing Republicans' ads for them.

you or anyone else that supports Obama calling this a "fake outrage" are preaching to the choir.

If you think people will forget what happened to Hillary - the vile attacks by democrats- is forgiven and forgotten, you are sadly mistaken.

I'm seeing a lot of defensiveness around the blogosphere these days. The man is not such a rock star.

Man, for such a pro player as Obama and his surrogates, you'd think they'd recognize when they hit a, er, hole-in-one.

and it wasn't just a repetition of a well worn phrase. You'd have to have been living under a rock to not know the pitbull+lipstick line from the campaign. Rep. Russ Carnahan also used a lipstick line- so this is no coincidence.

“For all his tough talk [McCain] buckled to the right wing of his party in his choice. Picked someone with zero experience in national government, zero experience in foreign affairs. There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick," he said.

Especially when you take into account how much Barack says that "they" will say such and such to make people afraid. A campaign that has been so sensitive to racial code words didn't see this coming? Bullshit.

After RFK-gate, you really want me to get upset over the injustice of it all?

As I've said many times before - "This would be funny if he weren't dragging the whole party down with him."

Now the wingers have him dissing America's Hockey Mom. I guess that beats claiming he wants her dead.

according to the comments at DU, and they were quite appreciative.

Reminds me most of the 'brush off the shoulder' moment. The audience gets it, the Obama-nets get it, the people he is insulting get it - everyone gets it except Obama.

I'm so sick to death of this, I can't even tell you.

Just as he's about to say it, he raises his hand to rub his forehead, as if he's struggling to find an analogy. It's a fake gesture, the tell that he's about to try to put something over. No way he didn't plan it. As Randall says, "It's the old 'plausible deniability' shtick," just like the cheek scratch. And then he pauses just long enough for it to sink in.

gyrfalcon's picture

He stinks at this stuff, and the phoniness is betrayed utterly by the self-conscious body language.

Given his history during the primaries, why is there even any doubt about the intent here?

... of his giving Hillary the finger. I think it was in the same speech as the brushoff.

He thinks he can get away with this nasty stuff, because Hillary didn't call him on it. But the Republicans ARE calling him on it.

We tried to tell the bots that what worked in the primary won't work in the general. Did they listen? Of course not.

Swift Loris's picture

and "plausible deniability." He gave Clinton the finger thinly disguised as a cheek scratch. And it was in the brushoff speech.

The Obots trampled each other in their rush to get to the fainting couch at the idea he gave her the finger. As I recall, Fox actually raised the issue.

not enough for him to lose, but enough to deny him any kind of mandate, and owing the Clintons.

Obama walking back and forth on a stage, and sorta aimlessly going over and over things people may say about him to paint him as a scary man and now these kind of slow moviing, not very witty put downs of the opponents' campaigning.

He seems kind of down, showing seeming low affect--and all with the down home droppin' of those endin's. Whassup with that?

Great speaker? Huh?

amberglow's picture

they took his whole game away, and he doesn't want to talk real solutions.

gyrfalcon's picture

Is what he's been saying over and over in those meanderings, and constantly snickering.

The man just has a tin ear for this kind of stuff. Big Dog would say, "They think *we're* stupid," and get everybody on his side. And he wouldn't snicker, snicker, snicker.

Yech.

At this point, lipstick = Palin. No chance in the world he didn't know what he was saying. And topping it off with the remark about "old" fish stinking-- it's just not a coincidence. The people who are feeding this stuff to him, or egging him on in it, should STFU. He looks *awful* saying these things with his nose in the air. He'd be better off sticking to the soaring teleprompter speeches.

Oh, God, how did we get here again?

Submitted by cg.eye on

Mr. Obama, *you* think *we're* stupid, but you thought you had us sewn up until the GOP started telling us that you think we're stupid, so why vote not for him and Palin, out of spite?

Oh, and the fish.

Did he have to Go There, too?

Damon's picture
Submitted by Damon on

It's pretty clear he was talking about McCain's policies, so I'll save my outrage for a real offense. If no one has ever seen or watched Obama off teleprompter, this is his typical, aimless thought flow. It's like watching a short-circuiting android. These are the reasons he didn't want to take on Hillary in townhalls and debates, and why he turned down McCain's 10 townhall debates.

As others have mentioned, though, the real story is that the audience so very obviously took it as a reference to Palin both at the rally and in the blogosphere. To note, my anger has always been much more at the OFB than the candidate, himself.

To me, this strikes in the same vein as the reaction to the Hillary RFK gaffe, only a million times more benign.

gyrfalcon's picture
Submitted by gyrfalcon on

of his coming out with these "inadvertent" sexist cracks are you waiting for? It's not like he doesn't have a history of it.

As I said elsewhere, at this point, lipstick = Palin. There's no chance this wasn't intentional, IMHO. I think it's a Politico article recently that talks about how "lipstick" is routinely used internally among Obama campaign people as shorthand to refer to her.

Can anybody think the insertion of the word "old" into the business about fish stinking from the head wasn't a deliberate invocation of McCain's age in the next sentence, either? His surrogates have been running around on TV making constant jibes about McCain's age, how he's "cranky" and "grumpy," etc.

Just because he looks like a choirboy with lofty thoughts doesn't mean he doesn't know exactly, precisely what he's doing.

I don't actually think he has much zest for it, but he's certainly willing to do it.

Swift Loris's picture
Submitted by Swift Loris on

He does this kind of thing when he's personally insulted. It's not zestless so much as compulsive. He's letting off steam.

gqmartinez's picture
Submitted by gqmartinez on

Same reason you accept the "tilt" to the right, er "center". Same reason you say the fraud primary elections are not really bad because its a "private entity". Same reason you blame the media for the sexism and misogyny. Obama could personally minimize everything above.

To make him more palatable, we've had to overlook a lot about Obama. And no better way to do this than to scapegoat someone else like the OFB, or to say the world will end if McCain is president. Don't look at Obama. That's what the whole "unity" schtick is about. That is why a majority of Dems will vote for Obama. But McCain/Palin is tapping into the fact that Obama isn't saintly at all. That seems to be working for them.

the other day about her: Mother Governor Moose-shooter?

Combine that with all the outrageous stuff he did to Clinton and this guy has some real woman issues. Don't know if they are mommy issues or not, but he's definitely got women issues. And that's one of the groups he needs to win over. Ah well...

Politico:

Palin's bio is "compelling," Obama said.

The crowd booed. "No, it's an interesting story." More boos. "No, no, it is. I mean that sincerely. Mother, governor, moose shooter."

The crowd broke out in laughter. "That's cool. That's cool. That's cool stuff," Obama said.

Granted, "mother, governor" is a lot better than "mother governor." Assuming Ben Smith got the transcript right.

And again, look at the crowd.

Would "Senator, father, basketball player" raise a laugh? Well, probably now it would. Now that the riff is in the air.

Should be "Father, senator, basketball player" to be parallel. But you'd need to find something feminine instead of "basketball player" for it to get a laugh.

The guys got nuttin'. Where the fuc* is Biden?! Why isn't he out there taking on Palin??!!! What a fuc*ing bust that selection was. All that money is disappearing and the PUMAs are sitting on their hands. Best of luck to the Obama campaign on 11/4.

The hook on the moose shooter is that it sums up so many atypical images - guns, a moose (really, would a duck hunter get the same response?) and a woman. So basketball player is good but doesn't create the same feeling of discomfort and naughty delight at something inappropriate. It's hard to find one for BO but arugalla jumped to mind.

This would be nice project if I had the time or brain for it.

How about "father, senator, community organizer". Yeah, I think I like that better. That's a keeper.

Now, when they're on the other side, when the GOP gleefully becomes FITH, can they even complain how they no longer profit from the media wilding? Obama let the dogs out, and now those dogs want more flesh.

We tried, didn't we?

Now they'll waste a week beating this down, one of eight weeks they have left to actually campaign.

the spotlight back, and this is how they're doing it.

it's not like it's just a slip of the tongue -- this is all intentional, and shows him getting back in the newscycle.

they used it repeatedly during the primaries--fauxtrage over what others said primarily tho--this is just making lemons, and getting the newscycle back on him instead of her. They had to know the GOP and media would jump on this--

--they were ready, and now are steering it back to Obama's favorite themes-- "media sucks"/"talking about talking about issues"-- instead of actually talking about issues.

What's worst about this is that Obama has now made it Obama v. Palin, which is the stupidest and most losing thing he could do.

the proof is in the way a surrogate used it the same day

Indeed earlier in the day, Missouri Rep. Russ Carnahan, appearing at a speech by Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, said that Palin is “someone with zero experience in national government, zero experience in foreign affairs. There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick.
