"Army Lt. Col. Steven Jordan, the only U.S. military officer to face court-martial over the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, ... [was convicted] of willfully disobeying a superior commissioned officer."
US officer found guilty of disobeying Abu Ghraib orders [reuters]
eight out of 12 original charges -- DROPPED
charge that he lied to investigators in the 2004 probe -- DROPPED
derelict in his duty to train his soldiers in the use of controversial interrogation policies developed and approved in late 2003 -- ACQUITTED
subjected Iraqi detainees to nudity and intimidation by dogs, resulting in cruelty and maltreatment -- ACQUITTED
disobeying an order not to discuss the scandal with other people -- GUILTY
And thus ends the trial [WaPo] of the only (and last) soldier ever to have to answer for Abu Ghraib
Eleven low-ranking soldiers have been convicted as a result, and two commanders, both senior to Jordan, have received administrative punishments.
As the Church Lady sayz... "How Conveeeeeennnient!"
Lt. Col. John P. Tracy, the lead prosecutor, said yesterday morning that Fay contacted authorities over the weekend to say that while going through papers in preparation for trial he realized he had never read Jordan his rights during interviews. A military judge ruled yesterday that Jordan's statements to Fay now cannot be used in the case.
Jordan now faces up to five years in jail, but like most of the others eleven soldiers who pleaded guilty, Jordan will probably serve very little time. Other sentences ranged from a few hours of community service to 10 years in prison. The architects of the torture manuals like Gonzales and Rumsfeld are rumoured to be serving a life sentence of being a douche.
