Words you won't hear from President Fuck You tonight
[Seems appropriate to sticky this for the debates. --lambert]
Carved in stone. These words:
No country, however rich, can afford the waste of its human resources. Demoralization caused by vast unemployment is our greatest extravagance. Morally, it is the greatest menace to our social order.
Carved in stone. Or, given the reality of Obama's rump Democrats, scratched in sand, or written on the wind.
And FDR goes on:
I stand or fall by my refusal to accept as a necessary condition of our future a permanent army of unemployed. On the contrary, we must make it a national principle that we will not tolerate a large army of unemployed and that we will arrange our national economy to end our present unemployment as soon as we can and then to take wise measures against its return.
Hear that, Democrats? You stupid fucks? That's your glorious past speaking to you. That's the good will that used to be on your balance sheet. Obama wrote it down, though. Now it's all gone. Go die.
UPDATE Actually, to be fair, the Freakonomics story could be a plant. If so, I have no doubt that Obama and Favreau will pervert FDR's words, instead of merely ignoring them.
