If you have "no place to go," come here!

With enemies like these...

...who needs friends?

I'm by no means accusing anyone of Glennuendo, but in the spirit of CD's last epic post, we should all keep our eyes out for shit like this, in which wingnuts parrot Holocaust denialists in order to tar Obama. Say what you want about how his presidency will be a boring tour around the Lekture circuit, but if this happened on our side there would be an immediate effort to tie these bloggers to McCain (campaign contributions?) and force him to issue a public apology. The ADL would jump down his throat and it would become an albatross that would go down in history as sinking McInsane's campaign (well, one of many.)

We don't have to go that exact route but this shouldn't go unnoticed because, again, the wingnuts will be nastier than ever over the next 5 months. Don't ever forget that.

Now, how are we gonna get this into gasbag-land?

But you are off base on the first if you read it without Obama-goggles, and especially read the updates.

This is definitely iffy territory, but Obama was wrong on Aushwitz, no amount of sugar-coating is going to change that, and some people will be highly offended by his carelessness with something that is that powerful.

Sometimes the Unity Pony has to take the consequences of it's actions and statements.

... never having to say you're sorry.

I thought you would know that by now, Herb.

And Obama was wrong on the facts, in the same way he's wrong about plenty of other facts in his bio.

Had it the other day, and Jeralyn thinks that the reason he gets these family stories wrong, is because he doesn't know them, only that his staffed researched it for him.

The point of it was, orginally the focusof his bio was going to be on the African father, but apprently they realized how dangerous that was, so instead decided to focus on his mother's family.

I think it's kind of sad really. He devoted a whole book to the ideals he had about his absentee father and is very clear that his father occupied many of his thoughts growing up, but couldn't be bothered to learn much about the people who raised him. Because that would mean he's callous.

I suppose it is also entirely possible that his Grandparents never talked about the family's history with him(perhaps feeling he didn't need to know, because he didn't fit into it). In which case, I feel sorry for him.

For example, I'm not any part German. I can't speak for everyone's family, but my older relatives tend not to like to answer "I don't know" and just make shit up. Which is how this Irish/Scotch-Irish/Welsh/English kid ended up taking German in high school.

I give Obama a pass on a lot of the family stuff - so long as it looks like he had a basis for saying it, getting things mixed up is pretty standard for most families, I think. It's only when he appears to be making shit up for political purposes or changing facts that he knows (like his wife's background) that I care about.

But that isn't Auschwitz. If even a private person is going to talk about that kind of thing, it isn't something you do without making sure that it is fact. It is pretty sacred territory.

... Obama's biography weren't such an integral part of his appeal -- and if he hadn't deliberately leveraged it.

So, if there's an appeal, it needs to be fact-based.

Helped liberate Auschwitz I would not mess around with the facts when speaking about it. There's just too much at stake. Treating facts about concentration camps with anything like the cavalier attitude he displayed during that speech puts him in league with the likes of Malkin (internment camps, yay!) and holocaust deniers.

The motto of the Scary Smart One's blog is"
""Facts need testimony to be remembered and trustworthy witnesses to be established in order to find a secure dwelling place in the domain of human affairs." Hannah Arendt

Obama messed up BigTime. He provided neither facts nor trustworthy witness. He thereby became part of the process of making the dwelling place of Holocaust memories LESS SECURE, to paraphrase Arendt. It's not an overblown thing to make a big deal of it.

It was a despicable pander to vulnerable vets, made even more despicable by its subject matter.

There's a world of difference between "Obama was wrong" and "Buchenwald wasn't all that bad." The former is true. The latter is barking-mad-loony territory and it's coming from McCain supporters.

This post was written hastily out of necessity (was almost running late for work) but I was curious as to why nobody was discussing this fucked-up, repugnant, death camp hagiography shit. (Unless they were, in an open thread or something, in which case I apologize.) Eyes on the prize, y'all.

But I still believe
And I will rise up with fists!!

Yes, there is a world of difference between being wrong about what you had for breakfast and being wrong about whether someone in your family liberated Auschwitz.

The first link you cited specifically DID NOT say what you are characterizing. Go back and look and then remove that link because it is an unfair characterization. The others you can keep but don't insult our intelligence by saying this is just a meaningless fuck up on Obama's part.

Let's put it this way, would YOU claim your uncle liberated Auschwitz in a prepared speech to veterans if YOU didn't absolutely know for a fact it was true and you had your facts right? Yeah, I didn't think so, but a politician running for President of the United States has a lower threshold than YOU DO?

It's like a Jeff Foxworthy "You may be an Obot if you....."

I'm not done pummelling you yet since you decided to not moonwalk but instead just keep driving away at it.

Since when does anybody get to say something like "Aw, Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, whatever! You know what he meant, one of them concentration campy thingy's, y'know? One of them "bad" places. Give a guy a break, ok?"

Um, no. No break.
