What the Bible Says about Liars

chicago dyke's picture

Hey, Republicans- I know there are a couple of passages about men who lie with men, and that's why you think you have the right to hate me and deny me my rights. But what about Deuteronomy , one of many, many commands relating to lies?

If the witness is a false witness, having testified falsely against another, 19 then you shall do to the false witness just as the false witness had meant to do to the other. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. 20 The rest shall hear and be afraid, and a crime such as this shall never again be committed among you. 21 Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Alberto is already a proven liar. Bush and Cheney and Rove too. I think you God is telling you something, perhaps you'd like to listen? This is a command I can get behind 100%.

The president hears directly from the supernatural entity that he worships (he thinks it's God), but we all know he can't follow written instructions. The Constitution is just a piece of paper, and the Bible is just a stack of them. No one can find the stones inscribed with the Commandments.

Maybe this is one task the "religious" right can busy itself with: How many of the Ten Commandments has the president left unbroken?

The parallel translations I'm using -- e.g Deuteronomy 19:13 -- don't work across chapters, alas. Though I prefer to quote the parallel versions, (a) because different people prefer different versions, and (b) because different translations make the heads of some fundamentalists explode.

This is a nice tool that unfortunately doesn't create a link to the cite alone (yes, I know about the Thessalonians bug...) but does permit references across chapters. Wonder if the guy could be induced to add the functionality of building a link from the cite...

No authoritarians were tortured in the writing of this post.

You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth". But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:38–39, NRSV)
