What a Rotten Day This Turned Out To Be

Rest In Peace 1980s Icons:
Farrah Fawcett has died today, aged 62.

Michael Jackson died in Los Angeles today. He was 50.

Troubled lives off-stage, perhaps, surrounded and arguably tarnished both Fawcett and Jackson's careers. But in their element, at the top of their game, each set the world on fire for a precious moment in time.

It is fitting to remember what they did best.

One reason I love Yves...

is because of remarks like this:

I was very taken with his performances, particularly the dance routines, and thought his deterioration was very sad. Despite his considerable talent, he never had a chance.

"Very taken with his performances...." See above!

And Jackson's life was sad. Spot on, for all the dry tone.

Michael Jackson Video Retrospective

at Salon. It starts with his Motown audition.

I'll probably have more to say about it this weekend since I grew up with Michael Jackson. I was a kid for the Jackson 5 and a teenager for Off the Wall and Thriller. Right now, I'm mostly shocked. And much happier listening to his music - it's amazing how much of its brilliance had been forgotten in recent years - than what I'm guessing is the media horror show surrounding his death.

"Do what you feel in your heart to be right -- for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't. " - Eleanor Roosevelt

What has become of the survivors?

What of Tito, Jermaine, and the other brothers?
What of the Osmonds (particularly little Jimmy, the blond kid?)

Why is it that, after the supernova flash of a brilliant career becomes the glare of media, we stop caring about the people who once inspired us, except as scandalous titillation momentarily brushes them across our attention, until they die?
