So the OFB gamed the ratings on digg? I am so surprised.

So, a bunch of Villagers on the teebee think Palin's an idiot, before they see the speech. Can't you see how insider-y, how Beltway, that makes you look? And we're going to look for honesty from these guys?

The only reason Nooners is pissed -- I assume this is that tape? -- is 'cause she didn't write speech.

Teh stupid!!!! It b-u-r-r-r-n-s!!!!!

no matter who first pimped this video, the fact is that it will go viral, as evidenced by video aggregators and also to the general YouTube idiot (see average comment on YT or general list of top videos for audience level of sophistication).

They didn't say she was an idiot, just that she was so less qualified, especially compared to Kay.

I'm not sure why this is insidery. I'm pointing out that this is general population appealing. And it may not even be anything to do with Palin, or what they are saying, just the shocking moment in time when the third wall is dropped for a moment, or the curtain is pulled back on the wizard.

I'm betting all those numbers are people who are already convinced. It's like virus P that only works on a population already infected with virus O.

And I don't think, at this point, that people give two shits about pulling back the curtain. That's a wannabe insider perspective shared by rotissierie politicos who care about pulling back the curtain so they can get behind it themselves, the next time.

I mean, it's like fighting a barracuda by holding up a sign saying "this is not a very good barracuda." But good luck with it!

TROLL PROPHYLACTIC Yeah, she's a loon. And populism, even right wing populism, is very powerful. Too bad that the Ds are figuring that out too late, and are using misogyny to try to counteract it.

I'm really not understanding, so you don't think that all the GOP elite are really "bummed" over this VP pick?

You don't think they (or she) spoke with Hutchison earlier about the choice? Or was this pundit water cooler B.S.?

I mean this interview with Sen. Hutchison really seemed to be very forced and this "inspirational story" narrative does seem kind of thin.

And Palin's speech is going to blow all this shit away. Bunch of ugly people sitting round a table vs. cute babies and classic speechwriting. The Ds better get it together, because right wing populism is powerful stuff. She really is a barracuda. Nothing but chin music for Obama, it was devastating. And Obama can't react without seeming to elevate her, and that puts it all on Joe Biden's shoulders. Who's a pretty good attack dog, but who's not a populist. We are so fucked.

I thought she was a pistol, as advertised by the GOP but disbelieved by the Dems.

Quick tour around the cablers finds even the skeptics -- Jeff Toobin and Campbell Brown, I'm talking to you -- blown away. They're still horrified by her, but they're staring wide-eyed around the room at her effectiveness.

Let's face it, most of what she said, with the exception of throwing Miranda rights under the bus and echoing the eternal Republican lie about raising taxes, is right in line with what many of us have been saying or thinking, only more pithy, about The One.

They'll come back to earth tomorrow, but I think the media narrative has shifted a bit.

and it's true--she's the one who wrote the "narrative" for Reagan--she's pissed that no one calls anymore.

moose-huntin' snowmobilin' rural babes married to (gasp!) Eskimos just as icky as her counterparts on the left do.

It's really kind of amazing to realize how much the people at the top of both parties loathe their bases.

all of them think that regular people don't count at all, and that we should all shut up and take all the shit they spew as gospel.

From HuffPo:

Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we'll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We'll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she's the right woman for the job Up next, one man who's already convinced and he'll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman.

(cut away from video feed, audio continues)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys -- this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it's not gonna work. And --

PN: It's over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she's never looked comfortable about this --

MM: They're all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullshit about narratives --

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along, move along.

The comments were after the red light on the camera went off. These folks weren't playing to any audience, just talking among themselves. It is as close to honesty as they can come.

Guess I'm the contrarian here (brace yourself for that shock) but I think Palin is a huge mistake, an act of desperation and a dragging anchor that will pull McCain down worse than just about anyone else would have.

The Talking Heads will of course talk her up, they need a close race for the ratings and the ad revenue and want to push the narrative to go with that. To an extent they can create the tension and the appearance of a close contest by repeating their talking points but this will rapidly become a tough sell; Palin is a bad joke and that will quickly become evident to everyone. Wolf Blitzer impressed is not much of a bar, is it?

I may disagree with her on social issues, but I like this woman, and I like her family, too. There's alot of lefty bloggers and commenters very unhappy tonight because Sarah Palin was perfect and she hit Obama right where it hurts. After listening to her attacks on Obama, it was easy for me to imagine that I was the one who wrote them, since I have had the same complaints since the very first time I figured out what Obama was all about. The line about Obama seeking the White House as a "journey of personal discovery" really hit home with me.
Looks like the bloggers who were calling her "Sarah Quayle" (cough, cough owner of a blog with the initials "TL") just stepped in it. This woman is no Dan Quayle. She is an Obama supporter's worst nightmare.

intranets's picture
Submitted by intranets on

You are right, this woman is no Dan Quayle.

She would need a law degree and also to win four congressional elections (twice to US House, and twice to Senate) to reach the "unqualified" level of Dan Quayle.

Let's say we count one Governor race as equal to a CD (she got 115,000 votes), so she is 1/4 the way there, oh minus the law school.

Then what the hell does that make the Biden pick?!

Here, let us have a real "moment of honest", here. The Village is pissed because they already had their cannons loaded for a Romeny or Romney-type McCain pick, and they got someone that threw them for a total loop. The Village is pissed because Palin ruins or reduces the impact of their chosen candidates "historic campaign". Their whole bitch-and-moan over "vetting" is centered around the fact that they weren't consulted, not that vetting didn't happen. As much as the pick was about consolidating the base, it was also a major "fuck you" to the Village. It's all kind of ironic, though, given that McCain was the Village pick in 2000.

Damon's picture
Submitted by Damon on

Looks like great minds think alike. ;) That's exactly why the Village don't like her. She honestly doesn't come from them. What's even more impressive is that given her looks and speaking style, she could have very easily allowed herself to be courted as a Village favorite.

Has kind of gone out of the window with McCain/Palin on one side and Obama/Biden on the other. It kind of makes it look silly to argue the difference of a state senate district, a city council seat, a senate seat, and a governorship. Governmental experience went under the bus and out the window when Obama was elevated to the top of the ticket.

McCain could have picked a school librarian, for all he cared given the top of the ticket on the Dem side of things.

but having been to law school, I can tell you it's no great recommendation for President.

Folks on the left really have to stop fetishizing Ivy credentials, or at least letting it show. It only plays well with a very narrow audience.

gqmartinez's picture
Submitted by gqmartinez on

Seriously? Are you high?

That only makes McCain look more "maverick". We saw what the Palin pick was for and it wasn't for the PUMAs. It was for the base and the Reagan Democrats. It was for families who have to work to survive. She is the anti-Village choice, whether it was forced on Mac by a scary cabal or not.

On the other hand, if the media likes her speech, it probably wasn't good.
