We Confront Rep. John Lewis For His Vote To Bomb Libya

On Wednesday morning June 29 we showed up at the downtown Atlanta office of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) as part of a gang of local residents, mostly black and including former Rep. Cynthia McKinney and others recently returned from Libya. We came to confront Lewis, supposedly a man of peace and nonviolence, for his vote to fund the illegal bombing of Africans in Libya, and his support of the heinous US intervention in progress there.

He blinked, and in a meeting we had with him afterward (though I had to leave early) he agreed to withdraw that support and vote against further war appropriations in Libya. We intend to visit other members of the Congressional Black Caucus in the coming weeks over this.

TECHNICAL DISCLAIMER: Pardon the jumpy text at the beginning..... just learning how to use Cinelerra, an amazingly versatile open source non-linear video editor... and the scratchy audio in the middle --- my shotgun mic died and I cannot readliy afford a new one. Also lambert will have to make the video visible, don't think this interface allows me to post YouTube embed code.

UPDATE I made the video visible by finding the video where it had been posted on YouTube and then copying and pasting YouTube's standard embed merkup. Bruce, I think that a post on Cinelerra would be very useful, even if you put out a few tips on your experience. --lambert

and right on schedule, as per local custom with downtown outdoor press conferences not approved by City Hall, a work crew arrived promptly at 10 AM and by 10:05 had deployed a jackhammer to tear up random patches of pavement a dozen paces away from where we were speaking.

We had more than one person taking video, and the folks who did this are motivated to hold a public event in Atlanta later this month, and carry the visit to some other congresscreature's office.

I'm on the crew doing the advance for the next one, and it being the second, I suspect we will get some kind of coverage next time. And we have a twist up our sleeves for the next couple times we do this as well, one that will make for good theater.

Only hour I listen to now on Sirius Democrat is when you or Glen are on the Mark Thompson show. I've written to the Sirius "Left" heads asking for a real Sirius Left channel with Glen having his own radio show.

Keep the pressure on. I see a tipping point.

Say "Hi" to Glen from "Lady Di" in Montana who interviewed him several times when I had a radio show. He was very popular among the Libertarians here for his economic analysis.
