The House of Representatives voted to refer Kucinich's Motion to impeach the president.
Wow, I thought it would go nowhere.
Members of the Judiciary Committee
The significance of this is that an impeached President cannot issue pardons, amongst other things.

i didn't know that about pardons
or if i did know at one time, i'd completely forgotten it. you've made my day by pointing that out.
I don't understand
What about Bill Clinton? Or did the fact that he was acquitted by the Senate make it possible for him to issue pardons?
yes
because Clinton was acquitted his legal powers as Pres were unaffected by the proceedings.
as I thought about it I realized this has further implications. The fact that the impeachment process has been launched will the pro-constitution wings of the military and civil service much bolder and the pro-coup wings much more nervous. I was seriously concerned about the imposition of martial law just before the election, this makes that far less likely.
It will also make private contractors far more circumspect.
it is a very good thing. Well done Kuncinich.
i was feeling kind of tin foily
worrying about the possibility of martial law either right before or right after the election. glad to know i wasn't alone.
also, i was upset about everyone appearing to drag their feet on this, but if there's not enough time before the end of bush's term to actually hold the trial, then he can't be found innocent.
if so, way cool. and very nice timing on kucinich's part.

can Dubya preemptively pardon everyone?
(i bet he will, even if he can't legally)
I don't think so
in any case, the pardon of an American president would have no standing before the Interntional War Crimes Tribunal.
It’s a vote to send it to
It's a vote to send it to committee where the Cheney bill has been sitting without action. This bill will probably stay there without anything happening either.

Oh, sure. I get my hopes up, and then you douse them with reality.
I really want to see the entire gang in orange jump suits. Is it too much to ask for a little justice? Sigh.
In a perfect world, it'd be great to have all the votes cast as they were earned, but that would not be in the best interest of the Democratic party. - DNC supporter after the 2008 roll call
Yeah...
they shuffled it to committee where it will never see the light of day again.
There's a really interesting video of Conyers being asked about impeachment (in a hallway while he's walking somewhere), and he gets kinda hot about being asked.
From a few months ago.(January)
YouTube
Conyers claims he has a "reason" why he hasn't done anything, and also makes a point that Pelosi can't stop him if he did.
After watching the clip and hearing Conyers' reasoning, has anything changed? Scott Mcclellan?
We shall see.
