The Rosetta Stone's birthday!
— British Museum (@britishmuseum) July 15, 2014
Yeah, colonialism; looted from Egypt by the French; then looted from French by the Brits. On the other hand, no looting, no translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs, eh? Or at least not so soon, assuming the Stone or an equivalent came to light absent invasion. Then again:
The [Rosetta Stone] stele is a late example of a class of donation stelae, which depicts the reigning monarch granting a tax exemption to the resident priesthood.
How modern. And:
The stele was erected [in 196BC] after the coronation of King Ptolemy V, and was inscribed with a decree that established the divine cult of the new ruler.
And much more. It's empires all the way down, it seems.
