If you have "no place to go," come here!

There was a saying about how "it's the economy, something-or-other." Now, what was it?

How could the czar have known?

This past year had all the earmarks of one where right-centrist, power-to-the-powerful politics were just the ticket, didn't it?

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time, at least to our betters it did.

According to the Times, here's what dear leader will be proposing in the SOTU address:

a package of modest initiatives intended to help middle-class families, including tax credits for child care, caps on some student loan payments and a requirement that companies let workers save automatically for retirement, senior administration officials said Sunday.

Connecting this to our previous conversation, whether or not we would agree with whether what O is proposing is "liberal" there is absolutely no question that it is a classic NEO-liberal thinking-e.g. tax credits rather than grants, focus on the "middle class" while not even mentioning the poor, failure to consider higher taxes on upper income groups, concern about deficits while failure to consider the single largest contributor to them, namely defense spending.

If liberalism has any future, liberals needs to repudiate this kind of thinking strongly and decisively. Will they do so in this instance? I'm not so optimistic.

That's called Social Security.

What Obama wants to do is set the default for 401(k)'s etc to opt in being enrolled rather than opt out not being enrolled, according to Sunstein's "nudge" theorizing.

So, in other words, more "management fees" for the thieves and looters who already destroyed our retirement. Because rent seeking behavior is what made this country great.

Think there will be a check box to simply increase Social Security take-out, so the vampire squids can't sink their blood funnels into our money? Not a chance!

obama, sunstein, thaler, et al, are for making the default setting on things [organ donation, 401k contribution, wev] OPT-OUT -- that is, you are automatically enrolled in a 401k or you are automatically an organ donor unless you actively choose not to be.

i warned y'all about this back during the primariez, that obama was for opt-out 401k-type 'pensions', but i'm too lazy to go look for my comment.

The default setting is opt in, so you're automatically enrolled. Has my dyslexia kicked in, here?

and it's meant to confuse the rest of us, i'm sure.

opt-in = not automatically in, you have to choose to be 'in', whatever the 'in' is, whether enrolled in 401k or being an organ donor, etc. opt-in is what we have now. opt-out = automatically 'in' whether you want to be or not, and if you want out, you have to actively make the choice to not have a 401k or to not be an organ donor, etc.

Jeebus. I really like the "in" is "out" and "out" is "in" concept we've got going here.

And I'm trying to make a joke on "pre-opted transexual" but failing, which is probably a good thing...

now my head hurts [but i have to admit to laughing at 'pre-opted transsexual'].

i only brought it up because it's important to be able to decode what these people are saying. if they are calling something an opt-out program, then it means -- when they use the phrase -- that you are automatically in whatever it is until you actively take some action to escape get out.

Good catch, Lambert. Isn't it amazing with these guys that no matter how cynical one gets about them, one is never cynical enough.

No, most (I'll use my term of choice) "progressives" will not repudiate this kind of thinking strongly and decisively.

This inspires a post idea....
