If you have "no place to go," come here!

The animated graph that works for almost everything important!

The animation really charts the decline of artic sea ice (the excellent Guardian article is here).

But I think you could just change the labels on it, starting by changing "Skeptics" -- how did such an honorable term get corrupted? -- to "the political class":

Decline of labor force participation (but no, "Recovery!").

Decline of real wages (but no, "Recovery!").

Decline of respect for institutions (but no, "Recovery!").

Decline of life expectancy
(but no, "Recovery!").

Even decline of "boots on the ground" (but no, "Recovery!").

Now, to be fair, there are some charts that are not in decline but show exponential growth: 1% wealth, CEO salaries, NSA data collection, data generally.

And it is also true that are some charts that would show organic growth: The number of butterflies, humming birds, dragon flies, bumble bees, honey bees in my garden, since i optimized for flowers this year, accidentally but maybe on purpose. My personal network has more nodes. And I would wager there are other slow-building curves that haven't surfaced yet. I suppose we'll see about this last.

I really do believe there's growth under the surface, we just have to wait and see it.

"Skeptics" -- how did such an honorable term get corrupted?

The first time I saw the term "skeptics" applied to people who simply didn't want to believe something was true was when people who deny the holocaust happened applied it to themselves. Some in our famously non-judgmental press echoed the term, and here we are.

For that general class of behavior, i.e., not accepting that something is true because they don't want it to be, that's a good word. Usually, they're called "deniers", as "Holocaust deniers" or "climate change deniers", at least when there's a specific subject.
