Taking My Leave from Corrente

Because of this:

Obama’s a helluva lot more human than the botox domme Queen Cindy and her gigilo soldier of fortune John Sidney McCain. You all have a helluva lot of a greater chance surviving the next four years with an Obama preznitcy than with a McCain-Cheneyburton oligarchy. If you vote “Mc$ame” like Rove wants, or you simply sit out this $election on your hands in petulance, you, personally, are making one of the biggest mistakes of your life.

And this

you whiners need to just register (R) and send in your KKK membership dues. Now that the Alaskan lady is running you have a reason to vote for McCain. (I kid of course, but seriously, get over it as Lord Cheeto is fond of saying)

And this

We need to take back the White House— and ALSO to speak boldly and thoughtfully on what a progressive agenda in an Obama administration should look like.

It’s feet-to-the-fire-time for our candidate. And he is our candidate now.

And this

Can’t have NQ’s truthiness here; I won’t support it.

(which I agree with)

And this (which I think is full of @#$%

And as to the objection to posting a cartoon from a site you don’t like, PB2.0 is going to be a mighty desolate place.

Do I really need to point out the difference between "not liking a site" and wanting to avoid affiliation with a side that peddles lies?

I don't know what's going on but something is changing here and I don't like it. So, I'm going to take a leave.

I have been very committed to the PB2.0 project but the latest posting and commenting here are not going in that direction.

I'll check back with you guys on November 5th. It's been fun.

Otherwise, you know where to find me.

you and I are reading different threads. You will be missed.

but we've seen trolls before.

You don't have to explain.

Very sorry you're not happy here. The tone has gotten pretty weird and all-over-the-place the last few days, but it is a rather open place, so things ebb and flow in unpredictable ways.

I guess I should leave too.

feel free to delete my post- if it's causing that much grief.

(athough I don't know where I'll go at this point.)

I don't comment much nor post. My writing flat out sucks when I don't have days to whittle it down, so blogs aren't a good fit for me to do more than some lurking.

Your writing is a joy to behold for both the content and the style. All of your posting was obviously well considered, researched, and from the heart whether we're speaking of the longer posts or your comments.

Snow-moon helped drive her off with an oh-so-pleasant-sounding STFU post. Why is it that Snow-moon is the one you're begging to stay?

P.S., I'm perfectly happy for Snow-moon to stay and become a valuable contributor, just a little puzzled by your priority.

I am really dumbfounded by your reaction to my post.

I've been hanging out here for over a year (registered and started commenting over 6 months ago), and you've been one of my favorites to read.

I don't know what I wrote today, exactly, to elicit such hostility-- but if this is typically how a "senior fellow" welcomes new people, I'm questioning my decision to spend so much time here.

I don't think my post was as you've characterized it.

(and thanks for allowing me to stay, vastleft; hopefully I can become a valuable contributer.)

For the record, I have enjoyed reading Frenchdoc as well-- also a favorite of mine. Only one of the examples in Frenchdoc's post belongs to me (the benign one, #3). So thanks, Frenchdoc, for lumping me in with the trolls. I suppose that anyone who votes for Obama is not welcome here? (I never thought I'd be writing that after the last 18 months-- as first an Edwards then a Clinton supporter. Wherever I go, I seem to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time-- too early or too late.)

Also, for the record, this is the only positive thing I've ever written anywhere about Obama. Just last week I was ranting about leaving the country after the Biden pick (at Avedon's place).

None of this is easy for any of us. We all exist on a continuum from "I'm voting for McCain" to "Obama is the Messiah." There are a LOT of permutations in between.

In this comment- you conflate "Obama skeptics" (your term) with PUMAs (what I wrote in my post). Not the same thing!

I still consider myself an "Obama skeptic." If this was not clear in my post, then perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my writing.

In simple, concise terms:

1) I have decided to vote for Obama; this is a decision that is VERY recent for me-- a decision made for pragmatic not emotional reasons.

2) Not voting for the Democrat in November has extreme consequences-- consequences I find deplorable.

3) I don't want to live under a McCain presidency- because I don't want his insane neocon advisors running the country. Like it or not that's what we'll get, my friends.

If you want to chat further, there is more I could share (more personally than I'm comfortable writing here) about my decision to "support" Obama.

(I could also comment on cg.eye's over-the-top "Jesus-Fuck" response, but I don't even know where to begin with that one.)

It's been a revealing evening. Good to get to know you all better.

was before you blamed me for driving Frenchdoc away.

I don't want to talk to you any more, vastleft.

Go ahead- post a snarky response- call me a name if you like.

I was going to offer to chat with you (IM) away from the site.

But I'm no longer interested.

You're too hostile.

Among those that drove her away.

But, please, don't let facts get in the way.

And name-calling? I guess it's never to late for me to pick up new skills. How about I call you "Oscar"?

Yours in bemused hostility,
VL

to "support" (using your quotes) Obama.

Swell folks like Nezua have a grand time pretending that Corrente is hostile to people who have earnest reasons for preferring Obama. Some of us are hostile to STFU implications, and most of us are hostile to weak arguments (which sadly have been the order of the day among many Obama supporters, but the job got a little easier when he became the official nominee). If you can make an honest case and write well, go to town!

when my firebreathing liberal friends from elsewhere [and make no mistake, most liberals i know aren't living here in almost-alabama] all ask me why don't you move away from there? why don't you come live among sane people? i tell them that this is a nice place to live [it really is wonderful] and that somebody needs to stick around to dilute the more toxic elements.

Remember, do what you need to do, but you're always welcomed here as far as I'm concerned, more than welcomed here, in fact.

BTW, I've also see a change in vibe, here, starting just before the Democratic convention, in fact, and now especially after it. As far as I'm concerned, nothing has changed, that is, unless some are the type of folks that are amazed by bright, flashing objects. And, in that case, those folks are doing more harm than good, here.

What will I do without your posts? Please stay.

Submitted by lambert on

I don't see this as a GBCW post -- she specifically says "leave."

And I don't see it as a "the trolls are too much for me" post.

Rather, I don't think the site is focused primarily where she wants it to be. I agree with her, but it takes time to turn the supertanker. And, to shift metaphors, if we build it and nobody comes, that's a problem.

Wow, what would we do without you?! FrenchDoc, we love you!

May we talk about this? Maybe there is some way to resolve this. I am sorry that you are upset.

Thanks for giving lots of examples of what you are objecting to, by different authors.

I'm not thinking well (like that never happens normally, ha!)--I'm being massively overworked and was gone on a work trip most of Friday--so please forgive any errors in this comment. To restate what you said, your deal-breaking issue is "wanting to avoid affiliation with a side that peddles lies" and you feel that these comments (and others) are crossing the line as far as ad hominem attacks and suggested repression of some of us and our values and other people as well? That they are not civil or serious debate?

(Note: I rather thought some of them were jokes or satirical exaggerations, but as I said, I am not thinking clearly...)

So, can we talk about this? I understand that what is going on is a huge problem for you. These things in conflict--civil standards, truthiness, truth, freedom to comment, freedom to dissent--are exactly the pb 2.0 problems you and I and all of us been discussing. Would you be willing to join an explicit discussion about the standards we should have and what we and others should do about fixing this real life problem happening on our own blog?

And to other commenters involved too (hi)--what say you? Can we talk about how we talk about things?

I support civil posts and comments; VL says they can't be too very civil or we lose something; FD says we're crossing the line with recent posts; Lambert says we should not talk so much about the horse race after the convention(s)--did I get that right Lambert?

How does this all fit?

Submitted by lambert on

As I said.

Anybody who reads this -- IMNSHO, since I don't speak for FrenchDoc -- as GBCW is reading the post wrong.
