One novel, nine collected stories, four collected novellas = a legacy for the ages.

It was fun pretending to be him. But it's not fun knowing he's gone.

and started reading reviews of "Catcher in the Rye". Reading it for the first time when I was 13 was one of the great experiences of my lfie - and not because I was also a troubled young person, but because it was the first time a character in a book came so alive for me that for the rest of my life I would think of him as a real person.

The reviews by the young over at Amazon were depressingly negative. The most common objection seemed to be that he was so negative and should stop whining and do his schoolwork. Or that he used bad language. Or that he didn't like anyone. Or that the language was dated and they couldn't relate to it. All this made me very sad that these kids will never experience it the way I did.

Anyway, RIP J.D.S.
