Republican National Convention

lambert's picture

Open thread on the Republican National Convention -- tonight being Sarah Palin's night (and I have to say that any move by McCain that sucks all the oxygen out of the room except for "Sarah Palin!?!" has to be smart, right?*)

Gimme a glazed!

Also, I have yet to see any of the staunch defenders of McCain step forward. Yet surely this is the perfect context?

And last night, I mistakenly placed the convention in Minneapolis, not St. Paul. I guess all the commenters were Minnesota nice, because not one called me on it. Oopsie.

NOTE * It's like the old saying about how a project becomes late: One day at a time. Well, 4 days of the 67, is it, have gone to Sarah Palin. Well done, all.

UPDATE 9:15PM EDT Seamus's owner!

But early. This, sadly or not, is the first time I've seen the long-playing version of the Mittster. "America cannot lead the family of nations if we fail the families here at home." As clear a statement of the relation between patriarchy and the empire would be hard to find. And his hair is terrible. He reminds me of a bad motivational speaker. Oh, wait. He's hitting all the buttons, too. Utterly shameles. "We will never allow America to retreat in the face of evil extremism." "Never been a day when I wasn't proud to be an American." The Mittster throwing red meat is such a bizarre spectacle. He's really no good at it, they're just bullet points like any other to him, but the crowd is fired up!

Governor of Hawaii is making a pretty good speech, but the crowd isn't doing its job with the cheering at all: It's thin.

It's very generous of CSPAN to just glance at the empty seats, as opposed to focusing on them.

10:15PM EDT Rudy! I think I'll have a glass of wine to get ready. "I'm sorry Barack Obama doesn't feel her home town is [pause] cosmopolitan enough." Ouch.

11:00 PM EDT Sarah Palin!! Crowd goes nuts. (And the camera keeps focusing on the same cute family. Who the heck are they? The Palins? ) Wow. Barracuda is right. "Bristol, Willow, Piper." Class markers, I'm tellin ya. And now the baby boy. Jeebus. "Our family has the same challenges and the same joys." "You will have an advocate in the White House" -- to families with special needs children. "5 years later, he's still my guy."

She's killing 'em. Watch out, Joe Biden.

Now the Republicans are waving signs to Sly and the Family Stone's Everyday People. Just shoot me. Not that the distinction between C and R matters any more in a post-partisan era.

"Here's little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion _ I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

That's smart. I think Americans hate the media as much if not more than they hate Congress, the President and Washington.

Speaking of media, what is with these AP reports that are written as if she's already spoken when she hasn't? They did the same thing last week.

but it's weird when they post it on the internet where it's available before she speaks and is written in the past tense.

Damn, the Maryland delegation went complete bat-shit crazy with chants when Michael Steele hit the stage. The convention crowd was the most excited I've seen it when he got done. He had them chanting "Drill, Baby. Drill." It was bizarre.

Mitt is all over the place.

They are asking me to vote for Barack Obama. How could anyone even make a case that these nuts derserve any elected office?

Really, they don't deserve McCain, to be honest.

Now, Huckabee's up next, and he will almost surely out-crazy Romney.

There are plenty of reasons to get angry at the RNC convention, I'm sure (not watching myself), but patriotism is an equal opportunity offender. Been to many Dem events where Patriosterone (testosteronated patriotism)is a bit over the top. I don't mind people having pride in their country, but Parties--both of 'em--substitute the word "patriotism" for strong policies.

The fact of the matter is that the chanting of "USA" is about as base as you can get. That the Dems do it, too, is not an excuse for how much more of it they do in the Republican Party. I'm a proud American, but unlike many Republicans, my patriotism doesn't spring forth from an underlying current of nativism.

Huck hit an interesting line:

"I'm not a Republican because I grew up rich. I'm a Republican because I didn't want to be for the rest of my life waiting for the government to rescue me."

EDIT: "Sarah Palin got more votes running for the mayor of Wasila, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for President of the United States."

...I can't help it. ;) I think he should've been a democrat. I also think the GOP treats him like an ugly stepchild because he's the real deal and couldn't shake his lower class roots if he tried -- just like Bubba in that regard.

way too much religion in his views and actions.

...inoculated to that. I think Huck's much less likely to implement things than most ppl think. Baptists are weird and Huck seems to come from the older school (they declared a firm separation of church and state years ago). For many Baptists, instituting anything that remotely seems like a religious law would be offensive in the extreme. So while I think Huck panders to the RRs I don't think it's what it seems. JMO. He's still a republican though.

Has the crowd chanting "Zero" as to the amount of executive experience Joe Biden and Barack Obama, has. The GOP sure loves to chant.

Lingle keeps tearing at Joe Biden like crazy. It almost seems personal. lol

Look for the red, white, and blue hockey jerseys in support of Palin as a hockey mom. It's a very creative (if even cheezy) choice to get spotted.

Also, when Palin comes on they'll be chanting, "Let's Go, Palin." A play on "Let's Go, Red Wings."

Hey, it's not as tacky as the Texas delegations cowboy hates. ;)

And, if I'm going to be honest, I don't trust them. Hope I'm not offending. The fundamentalists are definitely seperatists, but they are the same ones you can most expect to try and change government to fit Biblical rules, too, when they are elected to public office. It's something you don't have to worry about with say, Catholics. Maybe it's a cultural thing. Being from up north, the Baptist plurality pretty much stops when it hits the Ohio River, and I'd like to keep it that way.
