Rape victims advised to take personal responsibility

G.W. Paper Criticizes Sexual Assault Victims’ Lack of “Responsibility”

Earlier that day, several G.W. freshman awoke to a strange man sexually assaulting them in their private dorm rooms. The paper, disappointingly, softens the man’s actions as “sexual advances“:

Unbelievable

No, I take that back, perfectly believable. Just incredibly fucked up.

We have become a cruel nation, always looking for ways to blame the victim whether that be rape victims, economic victims, torture victims, or any other kind of victim. We have developed a pathological hatred for anything seen as "weak" even though in most cases it has nothing to do with weakness, it has to do with having the bad luck of running into a predator. We're so desperate to believe that it couldn't happen to us because we're not like the victim, that we turn on people when they need us the most. It's entirely fear based, IMO, and is what happens when you shred the social fabric. People try to find a reason not to be scared shitless at being left to fend for themselves.

Of course, rape is a special case since it has long relied on blaming the victim and is directly related to our patriarchal culture. But I think a lot of the pathology is the same - women (and men) not wanting to admit how vulnerable they are. They take safety in blaming the victim because it means it couldn't happen to them. Unless, of course, it does.

It took ages for the article to load but worth waiting

JFC- So, the guy who got hit on the head with a hammer was attacked/ assaulted. The women weren't assaulted, they experienced "unwanted sexual advances".

comments at the campus paper here. Sample (they're all in this vein):

This is truly offensive, irresponsible journalism. I am outraged at both the victim-blaming and the use of inappropriate language that obscures what happened. Someone trying to shove their hands down your pants is not an “unwanted sexual encounter” — it’s SEXUAL ASSAULT. Plain and simple.

The usual.

And as icing on the cake, how do you think the attacker got into the dorm? One of his buddies signed him in, that's how.

Oh, those irresponsible college women!
