Put single payer in the Democratic Platform

Todd Beeton alerts us to Obama's offer to make us part of the platform writing process.

I hope local single payer groups will take him up on his offer. If he starts to hear pro-HR 676 activity on his own website, as part of his own process, it will have an effect even if it does not make it on to the platform.

Platform Committee, Democratic National Convention, 2008

Elected to chair the Platform Committee are Patricia Madrid, Judith McHale and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

some troubling info about the platform cttee--

and the Obama staffers in charge -- here-- http://news.yahoo.com/s/cq/20080708/pl_c...

(i'm happy at least that a union and NEA will be there, but some others are not going to be helpful...and there's the whole Wallis abortion plank thing too -- http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/reprodu... )

that's some offer

i'll send the dnc my thoughts, but i don't have the resources to hold an event just to get them to listen to me, and why the hell should i have to register anywhere?!

You have the power to contribute directly to the Democratic platform, but in order for your thoughts to be incorporated, your event must be registered in our system.

they also suggest printing out flyers detailing obama's positions on various issues. so i clicked on the one about women's rights and got this message:

we are all imperfect. the page at the following address was not found http://www.barackobama.com/static/Flyers/Issue_Flyers/womensrights.pdf

to be fair, i got that error message for a few of the other flyers too [no error message for the faith flyer, i see], but still....

Not many will be able to take them up on their offer

But if anybody can it would be good to get a single payer group registered within their system. It would make us more visible.

I know this probably is one place I AM too cynical...

... but I had to "join the Movement" to write the platform. I'm not joining a fucking movement.

we are all imperfect....

... the exact opposite of Baltar's message from teh Cylon god.

just a data point.

Yup that's going to go very well

From your link above (and we should probably all read the committee members, if we have the stomach?):

"James Roosevelt, Jr. is President and CEO of Tufts Health Plan, a Massachusetts based Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and was formerly Associate Commissioner for Retirement Policy of the Social Security Administration in the Clinton Administration. He is the chief legal counsel for the Massachusetts Democratic Party and Co-Chair of the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee."

Amazing, not only does Roosevelt destroy democracy within the Democratic Party during the primary, is he set to disallow the credentials of Clinton delegates? And I'm sure he's a very helpful advocate for the single payer plank. Not.

There are a lot of business people and business experts in their fields on the committees this year, more than I can remember seeing (more GOP-ish?) Unfortunately, the way these committee people are "experts" are like Roosevelt above. I speculate that people will ask him, as many business people often network that way, because he's an "expert," and he'll explain how single payer is impossible and not explain that endorsing it would be in direct conflict with his job and retirement benefits. (This speculation is largely based on his reaction to the Democratic Party RBC stealing of delegates and votes and breaking of the rules.)

And I am just shocked, shocked, that Obama's supposed input from the people doesn't work--because I believe that's the way he wants to appear, not that the way he really is (otherwise, he would have altered a number of his positions: FISA, on women, anti-death penalty, etc.--because the pressure was coming from many people in his own party. Has he just used the "shield" of the independents and the GOP voters-he-can-supposedly-get to not deliver the hard stuff for the Dems?) Although those who believe in certain issues--like single payer in the platform--should keep the pressure up--that's the only way he's even partially backtracked. If you can't get through this way, try writing letters and public feedback like op-eds, etc.
