President Fuck You's Justice Department claims marijuana has no medical value

Fuck state medical marijuana statutes, and Fuck the youth. Don't just kick the hippies, kick anybody in the general vicinity (rather like a drone strike, thinking about it). Anyhow, NBC Los Angeles:

The federal government officially declared that marijuana has no accepted medical use and should remain classified as a dangerous and addictive drug. It will remain in the same class of drugs as heroin. ... The Department of Justice [sic] declared Friday:

DHHS concluded that marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no accepted medical use in the United States, and lacks an acceptable level of safety for use even under medical supervision.

The decision comes almost a decade after medical marijuana supporters asked the feds to reclassify cannabis. The activists point to research that showed its effectiveness in treating certain diseases, like glaucoma and multiple sclerosis, and the side effects of chemotherapy.

The LA Times spoke to advocates who criticized the ruling, but said it came with a silver lining because they could now move the issue to the federal courts.

Have I mentioned lately what an asshole Obama is? Remember when we thought there was a chance, even if a slim one, that Obama actually gave a shit about the people who elected him? Good times.

NOTE Still, I guess if you don't want to prosecute banksters for accounting control fraud, you've got to give your lawyers some sort of work to do. So there's that.

UPDATE Also, too, why not save some money?

Thanks for the Philly link! We are very very lucky to have a DA who "gets it" about the war on drugs. His name is Seth Williams. Back when he was running for DA, I remember I went to his campaign website specifically to try to gain some insight about his view of the drug war...

If you had used control-F on the word "drug", there were enough clues there to have hope that he'd make some good reforms. And he has.

because the science on marijuana's medical benefits is quite clear. Although if you're in the pocket of Big Pharma, that's something you wouldn't want people to know about.

But... addictive?! I think Obama knows all too well what addiction means, and yet he's got a cigarette habit and not a pot habit. Hmm.

And no safe use? What, are they saying that if you strapped someone down on a gurney and administered a toke, they'd die? Shouldn't "less likely to kill someone than a sip of water" count for something?

In 2008, MI had a medical marijuana referendum. Obama won the state with 53% of the vote; the marijuana referendum passed with 63% of the vote. Dope is more popular than hope.

I'm not surprised by this, the DoJ just sent out a memo to federal prosecutors that basically declares open season on growers/dispensaries in medical states. Not that they were ever left alone ... contrary to popular Obama supporter belief; in fact, his DoJ has brought more dispensaries to court than Bush did.

I chalk it all up to the weight of the pharma lobby and (some) law enforcement lobby. And Obama's general cravenness. Plus the fact that he's trying to head off even more states decriminalizing and/or pushing decriminalization further.

He's a damned fool, given that the President who reschedules - and the President can pretty much reschedule at his pleasure - marijuana will win reelection easily. Maybe our politicians think that only loser, hippie types smoke grass but that's not the case. Obama would probably be shocked at how many doctors and lawyers and business people in Michigan have horrible golf injuries that can only be treated with grass.

Anyway, fuck him...for this and plenty else.

Back when I was a wee tiny lil stoner(teenager) I thought pot smoking was so revolutionary. That's mainly cuz I grew up with a mother, who was an AF brat, and received the worst of the gov's propaganda on it in mil schools, and in her mind, it IS as bad as heroin.

When I got to college, I met a lot more, but still figured it for mainly a young person thing.

Now, I'm in my thirties, and I know more pot smokers than not. And most of them I've met as the parents of my daughter's school friends. Or as my co workers.

And all of em would vote for the President that made the laws better, even the 60% who don't vote.

that a great many people in DC (where i assume cocaine and booze are the drugs of choice) are not tuned into the reality of just how common marijuana use is. It's not just for hippies and wannabe revolutionaries ... not that it ever was.

The hippies popularized its use in the 60's, but it was the young people who went to Vietnam who really brought it into "mainstream" America. For one, those who went to Vietnam actually smoked good grass, sativas no less; unlike the hippies in the states smoking leaves and headachey ditch-weed.

When i was coming up, it wasn't my parents (the folkie/hippie set grown up) that still smoked grass. It was my friends dads' who came back from Nam and got jobs in autofactories.

At this point, i can't think of a person under 45 i've met who thinks grass should be illegal (whether they smoke or not), and it clearly has traction across party lines as evidenced by Obama losing to a marijuana referendum in Michigan.

So i don't get it, because it's not just who would vote for a president. We're talking about an act that could tip the balance to a party for a generation ... unless neither party really wants the balance tipped.
