January 3 is four days away. The biggest Democratic primary of the year is so close you can smell the desperation. Who should be standing up in the klieg lights at the end of the night, victorious? Who shouldn't, and why?

Who should be standing up in the klieg lights at the end of the night, victorious?

Edwards.

Who shouldn't, and why?

Huckabee, Romney, Thompson, McCain. Because even Jesus secretly thinks they're all sanctimonious dickheads, and he's getting ready to deep-fat-fry their asses in hell like Xmas turkeys. Besides, Giuliani's so clearly psycho he'll be the easiest to beat.

Like the man in the grey turtleneck I'll give a good-for-one-caucus only endorsement. In this order:

1. Edwards
2. HRC
3. Obama
4. Dodd

I'm stunned to find myself putting Hillary second, but Hillary has her bullet points, she sticks to them, and by God you know where she is with them. Even if they aren't my bullet points. By contrast, the more I looked at Obama, the more I felt his personality doesn't outweigh the fact that he's just dead wrong on how to get the country where it needs to go. The country needs accountability a hell of a lot more than it needs some sort of specious "unity."* Edwards, by contrast, gets it. And I find his biography just as attractive as Obama's. Dodd is my sentimental favorite, and I hope he comes out of Iowa alive, and ultimately serves Harry Reid's ass to him on a silver platter.

* Plus every dog whistle Obama sends out seems to tell progressives, very directly, to, er, get lost: McClurkin, Social Security "crisis", mandates, "trial lawyers." What next? "Activist judges"? The "liberal media"? It's not enough to have been right about Iraq as a state legislator in Illinois. That's what a theologian would call cheap grace.

Just kidding, but made you look! :-)

Edwards 15 delegates
Clinton 13
Obama 12
Richardson 3
Biden 2

Credit it to Edward’s organizers in the rural caucuses and the ”Nader Effect.”

Not a blowout for Edwards but enough to get credibility in New Hampshire. If he shows well there (win or close) then he’ll pick up enough delegates in the rest of the primaries to at least tie up the nomination. Fingers on one hand still crossed for a deadlocked convention that turns to Gore, with Edwards as VP. No sense in dreaming unless it’s a good one.

On the Republican side I couldn’t begin to sort the outcome but Huckabee will be smiling because win or lose he has already won what he’s really running for, America’s next great white evangelical leader. With Falwell dead, Robertson, Roberts and Graham doddering and everyone else either already openly disgraced or soon to be indicted, he’s the last man standing with stature and the calling. Look for a family operation that will put Jim and Tammy Faye to shame. Pass the hushpuppies, hon.

I will claim to have figured this out this afternoon (after the "I approve this negative ad before I call a press conference to disapprove it...but i'm not a flip-flopper, gosh dang it!" moment) but I couldn't think of the right words for the job title.

"he’s really running for, America’s next great white evangelical leader."

That's it. That's exactly it. All of his dog-whistling AND all of his off-Republican-talking-point points become clear. He's running for Billy Graham's old seat. (R-Godbotherer).

Chops to BIO for being the first to put it in print. ;)

Well thanks for the props, xan. I do try. As to his title, Hucky has been kicking a few of them around but the one he keeps returning to is “a true soldier for the cause” which is just too nauseating to contemplate for long.

If you’ve been hearing dog whistles they’re political all right but the arena is religion; there’s been a not too subtle public dialogue occurring between Huckabee and other big-time evangelical Pooh-Bahs for some time now, pretty fascinating. I’ve had a half-finished post sitting around for a while, maybe I’ll work on it tomorrow.

Something about that whole family makes my skin crawl and now I’ll have to see that open-mouth hang-dog face and hear that unctuous hypocritical voice over and over for the rest of my life – unless god calls him home sooner……:-]

and hucksterbee is gunning for more of that. who knows if he could be prez, i'm not sure yet. but leader of the great white martyrs brigade? hell yeah.

you don't need to hold office if you're head of that ponzi scheme. money, women/boys, access to captians of industry and gummint. it's all yours. that is who makes up 'society' today. really, as far as evil dictatorships go, they're really rather vulgar and dimwitted.
