A chrysanthemum and a question

Happy Halloween, everyone! Normally, Kathryn would be posting today's Plantidote, but it looks like Sandy hit near her so she probably doesn't have power. So, in honor of the second scariest day of the year -- the first scariest being election day, shudder -- let's all pretend I didn't mention politics and answer a question that's been bugging me lately: Why is orange a Halloween color? (And yes, I know that's superficial and all, but consider the source, okay?) I just wonder how or why that happened. Any theories?

Readers, please send twig (twig4now@gmail.com) images and stories for the ongoing Plantidote of the Day series. In exchange, you'll win undying fame in the form of a hat tip! Plants growing in your garden, your house, or neighbor's yard, plants from the forest or farmers' market, plants you preserved, plants you prepared (wine; cider; tea; dried beans), plants you harvested (grains; chantrelles), plants you picked (flowers), plants you dried (herbs), plants you covet or hope to grow someday. Herbal remedies, propagation tips, new varieties, etc.. And if you can, include some solid detail about the plant, too -- a story, the genus and species, or where you got the seeds, or the recipe, or your grandmother gave it to you. Or challenge us with a "Name That Plant" mystery entry ... And please feel free to add corrections and additional information in the comments.

so it's the obvious and not some sekrit meaning hidden in the color orange. Shoot! But thanks for the link. Another (sort of) mystery solved!

 Though I can agree with comment above re: bonfires, pumpkins and fall leaves.... I think Giants baseball in October is the real reason orange is the color for the season./s

The SF Giants is the obvious reason (and maybe that stuff about autumn).

But seriously, good thoughts to those on the East Coast.

But I must say, you have piqued my interest. Maybe I'll watch a game next year (that's when they would be playing again, right?) and see what all the fuss is about. At least, baseball is not incomprehensible, like football.
