Petidote of the Day 2012-06-08

Bird's nest in white bird of paradise
This is actually not a Petidote, technically speaking, but Birdidote didn't sound quite right. Anyway, aside from a better title, we need someone who knows something about birds to identify this one. The nest (look closely -- it's there in the center of the image!) is somehow stuck on the side of a leaf, so it's hanging vertically. The leaf must be one wall of the nest -- pretty cool!
What I would like to know is this: How did the bird get the nest to stick to the leaf? Is there a type of Crazy Glue for the airborne? And, if so, how do they apply it? I'm betting someone here has seen this kind of thing before and can tell us more about what's going on. I, for one, would really like to know.

Readers, please send twig (twig4now@gmail.com) images and stories for the ongoing Plantidote of the Day series. In exchange, you'll win undying fame in the form of a hat tip! Plants growing in your garden, your house, or neighbor's yard, plants from the forest or farmers' market, plants you preserved, plants you prepared (wine; cider; tea; dried beans), plants you harvested (grains; chantrelles), plants you picked (flowers), plants you dried (herbs), plants you covet or hope to grow someday. Herbal remedies, propagation tips, new varieties, etc.. And if you can, include some solid detail about the plant, too -- a story, the genus and species, or where you got the seeds, or the recipe, or your grandmother gave it to you. Or challenge us with a "Name That Plant" mystery entry ... And please feel free to add corrections and additional information in the comments.

Amazing find!
And I believe birds' saliva has adhesive properties, and helps their nest materials stick together and to other objects.
Makes sense, NWL, how many adhesives do birds have to work
with? Can't be that many.
It's so ingenious -- I just admire the heck out of birds. No hands, and yet they manage to create intricate woven nests, sing beautifully, and on top of it all, they can fly! I'd settle for one out of those three.
They can also learn....
... and they have culture.
Just think what the dinosaurs could have become!
Indeed! The dinosaurs could have been huge
(sorry, that was just irresistible!).
And lately I've been thinking about how much better people could have done. But now it looks like it's probably too late.
What I'm noticing is the beauty of the light...
... falling on the strange shapes of the nest.
