Orrin Hatch: Comedy gold!

Orrin Hatch has this to say on retroactive immunity for the telcos in the FISA [gag] Reform Bill:

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), also on the Judiciary and Intelligence panels, said the documents did not change his position that the surveillance activities "were and are" lawful.

Senator, you're threatening my cranial integrity.

Because if the surveilllance was so lawful, what the Fuck do they need retroactive immunity for???

Meanwhile, more good news from Feingold, Leahy, and that pussy Arlen Spector. On Rockefeller's craven, money-driven cave on retroative immunity:

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) and Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.), the ranking Republican, said any such agreement would be "unacceptable," signaling that legislation granting immunity to certain telecom carriers could run into trouble. Leahy and Specter demanded that the documents, which were provided only to the Intelligence Committee, be turned over to the Judiciary Committee as well.

Sen. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.), a member of both the Intelligence and Judiciary panels, said in an interview yesterday that the documents revealed that the NSA program was illegal. He said the presidential authorizations and the Justice Department opinions do not make it legal. "That makes it an executive power grab that is not justified by the statute or by the Constitution," he said.

All this buried on page A09. Of course, it's only the Fourth Amendment and the rule of law, and not a blowjob, so the editorial judgment on story placement is entirely acceptable, indeed laudable.

So Hatch knows everything about the surveillance activities? I am making a batch of homemade subpoenas--I'll save one for the gentleman from the beehive state. Surely he can enlighten the enquiring minds of our democracy, buried on page A09 or not.

as a citizen of Utah, Mr Hatch has been one of my duly elected Senatorial Representatives since ... before I was born, I think.

The system is so broken that nothing a Congressperson says can appall me anymore.
