And while you wait for the festivities to begin, here's the Princeton Economics Department on... the crisis (a term that I hate to use, since it buys into the shock doctrine frame, but I don't have a better one). Krugman, Blinder, et al.

Meanwhile, Hecate has some helpful advice for Obama.

McCain is a crazy, lying crackpot who uses "my friends" way too much. Obama is a center-right politician with lousy negotiating skills who would rather reach a shitty deal than look partisan and who, when he talks about policy at all, speaks in word fogs. Neither is capable of leading us through this mess. Neither leads at all.

I don't need to watch Village Theatre to know any of that. And my prediction is that, like the rest of this incredibly shallow campaign, nobody learns anything about either of these two guys (can't bring myself to call them men) they didn't already know before.

Speaking of cleaning the bathtub, does anyone know how to get the old appliques off. Finally got the drain to the tub fixed (hasn't worked in years, I have a separate shower) and it's time to clean off the icky appliques left over from the last owner.

Submitted by WRhouse on

Acetone, although I'd suggest you try it on a small out of the way spot to make sure it doesn't react with anything that might still be on the tub's surface.
My wife suggest using mineral oil and then scraping -gently!- with fine steel wool to help get it off. Remember to wash it afterwords, because you really don't want to stand in an oily tub.

p.s. I'm assuming they're in the inside, however the same tricks should work on the outside.

When I moved into this house 18 years ago I faced the same problem. Look on the back of a packet of appliques. There are, or were, instructions for removing them. It involved some very smelly and lethal liquid. You had to make sure the window was open and there was adequate ventilation to use said potion. It was something like carbon tetrachloride. The appliques came right off. And, a few thousand brain cells died.

Hope this helps.

I googled vinegar dissolve glue applique and sure enough...

More seriously, thanks to everyone for the tips. I was going to do it tonight, but got sidetracked doing other things. But I will have an applique-free tub by the end of the weekend.

got laidoff today--ugh (but got a good severance pkg)

I wonder if they'll talk about Meredith and the riots there?

Although good to hear that you got a somewhat padded landing.

What riots? (I've been tied up all day with workmen)

people died--& Ole Miss is infamous for still being racist--only 20% of the school is minority even today--

i'm surprised about the job thing, but it's a blessing for me really--i really hate being permanent/staff, and prefer being freelance...i've been slowly getting more and more depressed and feeling stuck there lately.

facilitated by the local elected authorities and the local media. For days, lawless white mobs with the open sanction of local authorities and local newspapers and radio stations chased, beat and shot at any black person who showed his face, along with whites they deemed sympathetic. They burned and bombed a few businesses and more than a few cars, and even shot at white cops. Sixty federal marshals were injured and President Kennedy had to send in troops.

Trent Lott was a student on that campus then, and I don't have the references now, but I believe he has bragged about taking part in the disturbances a few times over the years.

they're trying to use this -- and Obama -- to show how much they've progressed...ugh.

and i've read Obama's people didn't want to have it there at all because they thought it would become about race and racial issues -- and they don't want to have that "conversation" -- unless it's to accuse, of course.

with an AA student who was there late 60s (he's now a lecturer there) and he said that the white students weren't overtly nasty at that point, but that most of them had little confederate flags they'd pull out and wave whenever they saw and walked by.

I hadn't made the Ole Miss connection (I've paid very little attention to the debate debate) and I thought you were talking about something in the news. What with the economic crap, I fully expect riots any day. And, yes, I feel stupid.

There's a youngster in jail whom I visit every Friday evening from 9 to 10. That's way more important than anything either of those guys are going to say.

Tell me what candidate is going to address the issue of mass incarceration, and they'll get my vote. I know it won't be brutha O or that clown McCain.

Although I do think Joe Biden would probably be willing to address mass incarceration. He's for it.

Change you can believe in. (Mental note to self, must figure out who this mythical "you" is and try to knock some sense into him/her.)

A few ideas for those masochistic brave souls who are going to watch this thing:

1) Drink any time either of them say "tax cut" and you should feel no pain even if this is supposed to be about foreign policy;

2) Drink any time McCain mentions he's a POW (but not when he says "my friends" for fear of alcohol poisoning)

3) Drink any time Barack Obama claims to barely know Ayers and Rezko or to be shocked by the well-known beliefs of long-time friends.

4) Drink any time anyone mentions God, faith, or Jesus Christ.

Obama mentions been a Democrat or Democratic party itself or gives any credit to Clinton administration. I will be completely sober by the end of the evening.

If anybody plans on doing that, I suggest to have an ambulance on stand by.

hol.

You can get it in the paint remover section of good hardware stores. Failing that try a pharmacy; get 91% isopropyl alcohol, and pour it on from uphill. It may take 2 or 3 applications.

Lab grade alcohol will kill anything. We used it to sterilize our equipment doing IAQ work (and yes, we liberally washed our hands in it at the end of a job. Don't do that if you have open wounds and there's anybody around you don't want to swear in front of.)

We can admit that we're killers ... but we're not going to kill today. That's all it takes! Knowing that we're not going to kill today! ~ Captain James T. Kirk, Stardate 3193.0

Barry's losing his cool...and he's sound very whiney. I'm a bit surprised, as it was what I expected McCain to do and sound like.

Oh, yeah. McCain looks like a smiley little treasure troll when Obama's speaking. It's hilarious.

A slow intro, then you have to rush through the solution. Now he's rushing his numbered points.

Obama needs to use fewer words, not speak more rapidly.

If I didn't know McCain has the soul and brain of a lizard, I'd think he seemed genuine, unaffected, and a leader.

How in the hell is Obama on the defensive on the issue of the economy? This is crazy.

McCain is grinning like a Chesire cat. He obviously loves getting people angry and flustered.

amberglow's picture

McCain went there.

McCain's mindf*ck with Obama all week threw Obama off, i bet...and making it so Obama had to go to DC even tho he didn't want to.

lambert's picture

Do they favor the plan?

Obama: "I am optimistic about our ability to come up with a plan."

Now Obama is filibustering about his record!

McCain: "A lot of us saw this train wreck coming." Again, McCain is on top of his weird game. Echoing Churchill, doing that AZ man of the people thing. If only I didn't know he was a shithead.

Obama had a good comeback on the spending freeze idea by McCain (i.e. hatchet vs. scalpel). Very true.
