One in six
Once upon a time, in a land far away. a land where women were on the verge of attaining full humanity:
someone did a study.
And I so hate it when people refer to vague studies that someone or other did, maybe or maybe not, that I'm counting on you, dear friends.
Someone did or didn't do a study in which photos of groups of people were shown briefly to the subjects, and they were asked to report the proportion of women (in some way). And it turned out that if a photo contained more than about 1/6 women, it was perceived (by men and women) as being composed of mostly women.
This would have been sometime between 1973 and 1980. But I'm interested in later references as well.
If anyone can find the source for me, I'd be ever so grateful. In fact, I'd make my gratitude concrete. Please send me a private message.
And if I'm spinning a fantasy on some half-recalled bad bit of research, I'd be equally grateful. Let me know.
