I always wondered if our celebration of Labor Day on another date was a way of heading off international solidarity.

Probably. TPTB made May 1 "Law and Order" day, definitely as a poke in the eye of revolutionaries. Not that anyone other than a few government entities pays it any attention, but still.

It's time for Samhain, Beltane, Walpurgisnacht, the Queen of the May, and Morris dancing!

From the May Day wiki: "May Day marks the end of the unfarmable winter half of the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations." Somehow that can't be legislated out when fools like me remember the real meaning. :-P
