Obama's agenda

Laying the Groundwork for the Backfire

Every time I read Ezra Klein pooh-pooing Barack Obama’s domestic agenda, I feel a bit baffled. He’s running on a platform that promises universal preschool, dramatic cuts in carbon emissions and investments in clean energy infrastructure, health insurance that would be affordable for all, comprehensive immigration reform, substantial labor law reform, large new spending on K-12 initiatives, and tax reform to make the federal code much more progressive overall. Is it as left-wing as what John Edwards ran on in the primaries in 2008? No. But it’s much more robustly progressive than what John Kerry offered in 2004, what Al Gore offered in 2000, or what Bill Clinton offered in 1996, and somewhat more ambitious than the Clinton ‘92 program. Presumably, that entire agenda won’t actually be enacted.

But if it were enacted, it would be the most dramatic shift in national policy since the high tide of the Great Society.

Hey, if we succeed in adding Medicare for All it would be The Great Society.

Truthfully the labor law reform by itself will raise living standards and transform American society.

It matters that Obama and the DNC stole Florida and Michigan. It matters that Obama poisoned netroots with his digital enforcers. It matters that Obama enforcers intimidated voters in the caucus states. It matters that false charges of racism was made against the Clintongs. It matters that Obama actually copied the Harry and Louise ad in the primaries. It matters that he ran a scorched earth campaign.

None of that alters the fact that we have some excellent opportunities in the next four years.

what he says and what he'll actually fight for

are very different things--especially because he's inviting the Republicans and businesses in on all of it, and promises over and over and over not to fight.

none of the things you list will come to pass with a bitter and harsh -- and partisan and divisive -- fight--too many billions and too many powerful players are against them.

At Black Agenda Report, a take on what Biden was actually

talking about when he told the insiders at the fundraiser that Obama would be tested and that he would need those supporters to stick with him in doing unpopular things.

A draft? In order to get the numbers of soldiers he wants to put into Afghanistan?

Doing big progressive social programs? Not doing them?

Anyway, Margaret Kimberly suggests the planning is already underway to continue Bush's War on Terra:

... Bush has authorized the establishment of the Presidential Transition Coordinating Council at an earlier date than in any other election year. High level staffers from the Obama and McCain campaigns have been engaged in security briefings with the Bush administration and are also in the process of obtaining FBI security clearances, the first time that has happened prior to election day. Bush doesn't want to head back to Texas without insuring that his doctrine remains firmly in place after January 21st.

The plans for continued American military aggression are already underway and Biden can't keep quiet about it. Biden made his statements during a Seattle fundraising trip that took in a cool million dollars. Yet he wasn't just making a plea for cash, he made a plea for support of whatever action the Obama administration may take.

"Because I promise you, you all are gonna be sitting here a year from now going 'oh my God, why are they there in the polls, why is the polling so down, why is this thing so tough?' We're gonna have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years. So I'm asking you now, I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us." The Obama/Biden doctrine must be truly awful. If Big Mouth Joe is already pleading for patience from the faithful we are looking at Bush/Cheney the Sequel.

Ah, yes, Biden--who advocated invading Iraq before 9/11! Dem hawk, meet...what? Is Obama the antidote to hawkishness?

Not if the Maddow interview is any indication--gotta fight the Good War* in Afghanistan...

A Dem Congress would hold McCain's feet to the fire; it would provide opposition. With Obama as prez? See no feet, see no fire, be no opposition.

*Andrew Bacevich has a piece in Common Dreams which says BushCo has several different wars going on all at once, none with clearly defined objectives. Obama can have his choice of wars! Dennis Ross is already working to get Iran high on the list. Interesting piece, not too long.

we know it's definitely foreign policy--

so he must be right.

it's our aggressive and unjustified foreign actions that most Obama supporters would think wrong and be against -- not domestic actions.

OT, but new Obama relatives found in Boston by British press--

I haven't doubled checked this yet, but it seems there's an aunt (one mentioned in his Dreams of My Father) and an uncle.

I was looking for an article about how the campaign is trying to tamp down expectations as to what Obama will actually do once he is in office.

Just interesting.

Yeah

There was also stories done about poor relatives in England. Quite frankly, I'm not sure why their conditions are of any worth noting.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

Damon, I was just kind of amazed--I had no idea he had relatives

from his Kenyan family, people he wrote about in his book, actually living here in the US. It again brought to mind how little we know about this man and how secretive either he and/or his campaign managers are. (Frontline teaser on right now, saying "You think you know them" about info program on Obama and McCain on PBS--and I thought, no, I do not know him--or what he will do.)

I didn't know about relatives in England--I read about a cousin living in very, very, very poor conditions in Kenya.

There's probably lots more we'll gradually learn about him and his background. But, quite rightly, family he never really knew is not all that formative.

More news on the Aunt in Boston--Illegal immigrant and Obama

says he did not know about her status in the US and laws must be followed.

Perhaps she was being protected by not being mentioned--or he actually did not know. Altho' her name turned up as a donor to his campaign. oops--she went over the $200 limit.

According to Federal Election Commission documents filed by the Obama campaign, Onyango has contributed $260 to Obama over a period of time. Under federal election law, only U.S. citizens or green-card holders are legally permitted to give money to campaigns. Onyango, who listed her employer as the Boston Housing Authority, gave in small increments to the Obama campaign. Her latest contribution was $5 on Sept. 19. (From AP article)

Beware: AP story appearing in WashTimes.

The Associated Press found that Obama's aunt had been instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya. The woman, Zeituni Onyango (zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh), is living in public housing in Boston and is the half-sister of Obama's late father.

A statement given to the AP by Obama's campaign said, "Senator Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed."

Becomes a sad story now--she is in handicapped access housing, which indicates she needs assistance. And now? Just another sad, sad story of unintended consequences?

Came across this while hunting for transcripts of Obama's CO interview and for his interview with Brian Williams on 10/30.

she was muzzled by Obama's campaign--

"... Speaking outside her home in Flaherty Way, South Boston, on Tuesday, Ms Onyango, 56, confirmed she was the “Auntie Zeituni” in Mr Obama’s memoir. She declined to answer most other questions about her relationship with the presidential contender until after the November 4 election. “I can’t talk about it, I just pray for him, that’s all,” she said, adding: “After the 4th, I can talk to anyone.” ..." -- http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/wo...

They clearly told her not to talk to reporters, which makes Obama's statements about her just more lies--like with all his associates/friends/past connections.

Um, no

Hey, if we succeed in adding Medicare for All it would be The Great Society.

[edited to correct for hasty misreading]

The Great Society:

Two main goals of the Great Society social reforms were the elimination of poverty and of racial injustice. New major spending programs that addressed education, medical care, urban problems, and transportation were launched during this period.

That the list in the quoted paragraph plus Medicare for All appears to be the Great Society is an excellent illustration of how atrophied the "liberal" agenda has become after years of spineless Democrats and right-leaning politicians like Obama.

Read the wikipedia article linked to see what real liberals once stood for. Just on the environment alone:

* Clear Air, Water Quality and Clean Water Restoration Acts and Amendments
* Wilderness Act of 1964,
* Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966,
* National Trails System Act of 1968,
* Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968,
* Land and Water Conservation Act of 1965,
* Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965,
* Motor Vehicle Air Pollution Control Act of 1965,
* National Historic Preservation Act of 1966,
* Aircraft Noise Abatement Act of 1968, and
* National Environmental Policy Act of 1969.

All of that (except the Wilderness Act) was accomplished in a single term, and nearly all was good legislation that people are fighting to protect today. What's Obama proposing specifically that lines up with any one of those pieces of legislation, much less the entire list, much less the rest of the Great Society legislation that accompanied all of that?

Found it: Obama Lays Plans to Kill Expectations After Election

Barack Obama's senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins next week's election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harboring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve.

The sudden financial crisis {Sudden??] and the prospect of a deep and painful recession have increased the urgency inside the Obama team to bring people down to earth, after a campaign in which his soaring rhetoric and promises of "hope" and "change" are now confronted with the reality of a stricken economy.

One senior adviser told The Times that the first few weeks of the transition, immediately after the election, were critical, "so there's not a vast mood swing from exhilaration and euphoria to despair."

The aide said that Obama himself was the first to realize that expectations risked being inflated.

In an interview with a Colorado radio station, Obama appeared to be engaged already in expectation lowering. Asked about his goals for the first hundred days, he said he would need more time to tackle such big and costly issues as health care reform, global warming and Iraq.

"The first hundred days is going to be important, but it's probably going to be the first thousand days that makes the difference," he said. He has also been reminding crowds in recent days how "hard" it will be to achieve his goals, and that it will take time.

"I won't stand here and pretend that any of this will be easy -- especially now," Obama told a rally in Sarasota, Florida, yesterday, citing "the cost of this economic crisis, and the cost of the war in Iraq." Obama's transition team is headed by John Podesta, a Washington veteran and a former chief-of-staff to Bill Clinton. He has spent months overseeing a virtual Democratic government-in-exile to plan a smooth transition should Obama emerge victorious next week.

From Tim Reid article in The Times of London.

Might have been good idea to mention some of this in a few of those 30 minutes in the bid ad buy, but, hey, win first--govern later.

Times of London is a Murdoch property

only glanced at the article, are any of the sources on the record?

"a senior advisor"

No name, and nothing more to the article but a chopped-up parsing of quotations taken out of context and biased speculation. It is a wonderful example of the art of distortion, a Rovian style hit piece designed to spread dissention and unhappiness through the political Left and suck hope out of the struggling undecided Middle.

A thoughtful media critique is no longer operative. All that happens now is the swallowing whole of any anti-Obama swill shoveled out, and then a smiling look up to ask "Please, sir, may I have another?"

Please indeed

Considering some of the dubious stuff you've posted here, particularly the Sarah Palin nonsense, you should probably not be going on about "thoughful media critique" and "Rovian style hit pieces".

No, thanks -- I didn't care for the first, ks, and this

piling-on of yours only makes the noisome helping fulsome.

What are you talking about?

You post doesn't make sense or it could be your usual obtuse way of expressing yourself.

Too difficult for you?

Sarah obtuse? Can see that, perhaps, for those whose taste runs to pablum; having to chew on something might be an overwhelming challenge.

Sarah Palin nonsense

Something she manages to produce quite well all on her own.

"Media critique" was, I admit, fanciful; we used to have one lying about, quite robust, but now it's gone missing.

it's Obama's own words ---

he's repeatedly said it on the trail and in interviews.

Biden has said it repeatedly on the trail too.

Yes, we can! Wait! Maybe not, temper down

Nice. Remember when Obama smeared any critic of his empty rhetoric as a "cynic?"

Keep looking for a transcript

Politicians tend to repeat. If this is accurate reporting, the same talking points will show up elsewhere. I agree that Murdoch's Times isn't my first choice as a primary source -- but the quotes are a good start. Thanks!

but it looks like there's a link to the audio here.

no, i haven't listened to it yet, so i don't know if obama was accurately quoted or not.

Hipparchia, t/u for finding that intervie--

All questions very straight forward, no follow-ups, closed with interviewer expressing hope Obama wins. Second to last questions was whether he was surprised to have 100K+ people at CO rally. That captures the tenor of the interview.

Obama closed the 100 Days question with comment he needs to focus on not losing time getting the economy back on track.

IMHO, he did not see a connection between getting the economy back on track and getting people assured healthcare. But, hey, that's one of top issues. Apparently not his.

When asked about energy, he said people need to turn out the lights when they leave a room as part of short term sacrifices people must make.

The national debt is now 10

The national debt is now 10 trillion dollars. The deficit is now over 500 billion. On top of that states are going broke, infrastructure is failing and unemployment is rising, now over 6%. That doesn't include the 700 billion bailout.

The Iraq/Afghanistan wars are costing 16 billion monthly...and we are not leaving anytime soon.

So...where's the money?
