If you have "no place to go," come here!

Obama to Bill Clinton: You've got the Unity Pony. Give it to me.

Readers, I am not kidding. Get a load of this trial balloon from the UK. Times Online. [I've deleted the lying liar material on Hillary's remarks before the Argus editorial board]. And keep reading, because you'll love the sweetener:

Barack Obama wants Bill to heal Hillary Clinton wounds
Barack Obama, the probable Democratic presidential nominee, wants Bill Clinton to help him heal the deep party rifts created by his wife Hillary’s divisive campaign...

“If anybody can put their arms around the party and say we need to be together, it is Bill Clinton,” a senior Obama aide said.

And Bill gets?

But look, I thought that Obama was the one with the Unity Pony? But now it's Bill Clinton? Then why'd you smear him as a racist? WTF? Is Obama's Unity Pony on back order too? Then how'd Bill Clinton get one?

"He’s brilliant, he has got heart and he cares deeply about the country. It’s tricky because of his position as Hillary’s spouse, but his involvement is very important to us."

And Bill gets?

“Bill Clinton will give permission to Hillary supporters to come into our camp and become one party.

Er, no. We're not a cult. Or a movement. We don't "need permission." You asshole.

He is critical to this effort.”

And Bill gets? You're going to love this:

Obama has an important bargaining chip which could tempt Bill Clinton into the fold. Friends say the former president is distressed by the rift in his relationship with the African-American community after he was affectionately described in the 1990s as the “first black president”.

William Galston, a former White House official and Hillary Clinton supporter, said: “One part of him [Bill Clinton] deeply regrets the schism that has opened up with the black community and he would welcome the opportunity to redeem himself.” Campaigning for Obama would go a long way to restoring good relations.

Lovely. So Obama smears Bill Clinton as a racist in the black community, and then graciously offers the opportunity for Bill Clinton "to redeem himself" -- as if he needed redemption -- by campaigning in the very same community where Obama smeared him.

Truly a mindfuck of cosmic proportions.

And what's even more stunning than the arrogance these guys have is the ineptitude of the pitch.

They're flailing.

And now I must go paint. It's just that I can't take my eyes off the trainwreck that the Obama campaign is becoming. It seems like every hour, some piece of heavy metal machinery goes flying off and injures somebody....

NOTE Of course, it's obvious to all but the OFB that the way to heal the rift between the black community and the Clintons -- if indeed it exists, since blacks want Hillary on Obama's ticket more than any other population group -- would be to have Obama campaign for Hillary. It would be a good learning experience for him... Before he returns to the Senate. Or to private life as the head of his "movement."

UPDATE The Unity Pony hits the big time LOL!!!!!!

There is no sane interpretation of this. My mental response to your cliffhanger before the jump was, "No-Fault Divorce?????????????????".

What kind of perverse definition do these people have for the word "loyalty"?

We already know that. And I doubt he cares that much what his favorability ratings are in the African American community right now, because he has an actual history to be proud of. They will go back to being just fine after this campaign.

These are mean, creepy people. I hope they lose.

was that Bill was calling around trying to talk Obama into inviting Hillary to be VP, because "she's earned it" and as a way to "heal the party" but that Obama wasn't interested. Heard that on several newscasts, always without attribution but with lots of serious head-bobbing.

When that wouldn't flush, and to put some topspin on the bad poll news for Obama (more on that coming in a day or two) the next floater dropped was that maybe Obama should ask her to be VP because she could "help him" carry a "couple of states" - those states being Florida and Ohio. Straight faces all around, more head-bobbing, and not a word about how if SHE were the nominee she doesn't need any help from anyone to carry those states.

Now the new best offer is that Bill gets his black friends back? The ones that stabbed he and Hillary in the back? How can he possibly refuse that? If Obama throws in bedtime phone calls from Al Sharpton and weekly lunches with Donna Brazille, this one smells like a winner.

Flailing. Panic. Wish I knew what their EC polls show; must be very, very bad news.

this pattern is getting a little worrisome.

i don't recall barack obama accepting responsibility for even one major problem that has happened in this campaign season.

i don't recall barack obama making even one major decision of the kind that one would expect of an american political leader.

the obama campaign seems to have two rules defining their candidate's "responsibility" to our political system:

1) whatever happens bad, it's somebody else's doings, somebody else's fault.

2) whatever needs to be done, somebody else besides senator obama needs to do it.

heal the party? that's bill clinton's job.

fix the potentially lethal democratic problem with florida? that's the dnc's problem.

generate a better, more civil tone in the campaign for democratic nominees? that's senator clinton's responsiblity.

problems with white working-class voters? that's due to their racism

problems with rural, small town voters? that's due to their responses to economic distress.

feel free to add to the list.

this is not, repeat not, reassuring behavior from a candidate for the presidency.

all the less so when we recall that we have just endured the eight-year burden of a president who behaved this way.

never once in seven and one-half years has george w. bush accepted responsibility for a serious problem that occurred during his terms in office.

added later:

i'm going to add something to this post which i hope will help focus discussion:

in her petite essay "legitimacy, not unity" anglachel wrote this:

[ You gain legitimacy by being willing to risk power. This is the root cause of Obama's failure to be a unifying figure even as he preaches Unity.]

that is the way i look at senator obama's unwillingness to "accept" responsibility for the things that go wrong in the democratic nominating battle

and the things that could go right with competent leadership from him.

the obama campaign is all about winning. i consider this the malign influence of david axelrod, a devoted fan of several sports (not so different from the blogger boyz, right?).

if you are about winning only,

- then you do not "risk power" by letting your candidate take a chance on suggesting a solution to a major problem.

you don't do so because your primary concern is to avoid allowing the media or the public to "get a hold on" your candidate (in wrestling terms), i.e., to have a basis for criticizing him or her.

- similarly, you do not "risk power" by accepting responsibility, even shared responsibility, for an error or a problem. you point the finger (so to speak) at your opponent.

this technique of achieving and maintaining power, by the way, was not invented by david axelrod.

it is a technique used by the bush/cheney adminstration for the entirety all of its 7 1/2 years in power - to whit, NEVER, EVER TAKE OR ACKNOWLEDGE RESPONSIBILITY.

that attitude toward winning a political contest and toward governing

presents a severe problem for a representative democracy,

the problem of an incomplete or corrupted public discourse,

discourse in which problems, potential solutions, errors of judgment, and failures of policy cannot be discussed except in politically sanctioned ways protective of those in (or seeking) authority.

“Bill Clinton will give permission to Hillary supporters to come into our camp and become one party.

Did those words come directly out of Obama's mouth? No "staffers" or spokespeople, but the candidate actually said those words?

I need to screech. If my house wasn't full of neighborhood kids right now, I would be. I can't wait till they leave, I need to smoke a bowl. I'm gonna lose my freaking mind. He'll give us permission. Un-Fuckin-Believable.

Number one, his wife is the candidate, she's been telling us to vote for Obama for months, and we're not listening to her, why in the blue Fuck would we listen to Bill?

Number two, yeah, we're not mindless robots, our votes belong to us, nobody tells us how to vote.

Number Fucking Three!!, Give us permission!!! I get that what he was saying was that by having the Big Dawg campaign for him, he would make it permissible for all us white racist hillbillies and rednecks to vote for Obama, but still, talk about tactless.

And look at the other implication, that Bill will campaign for him in the black community. Obama still doesn't plan to do any outreach to this community. Absurd. The AA community has been royally screwed and ignored this election. Obama has them in the bag, so he isn't putting any effort to them, and he screwed Clinton with the AA's, so it's been pointless for her to put any effort to them.

the candidate himself has to woo voters, and if they're depending on Bill to do it after how they trashed him, they've already lost--and also hopelessly messed up the whole reason why Obama says he's running.

P.E.R.M.I.S.S.I.O.N. Yep, all us little women need Daddy Bill's permission to cast our votes. Obama's campaign is f-king tone deaf.

I have a great deal of respect for Bill and Hillary but I have made up my own mind without anyone's permission for decades. Don't see that changing anytime soon.

Memo To Obama's Campaign: Your actions have given me PERMISSION not to vote for Obama. You are already in a very deep hole. Please stop digging.

How many times must you be reminded to provide links?

Very impressive. Lambert chats with Hillary, hits the presses with Modo and Broder; what next?

Truly, that's pretty nice. Well played.

to be part of the Big Dog's psyche (all that dogging around, natch), to bond with him after he spent the whole campaign dissing his wife? Using every single trope, rumor and talking point of the VRWC? After commentators were let loose to call his wife a pimp and his daughter a ho?

Well. That is breathtaking. Really, just breathtaking.

Obama and Bill meeting in a room, after the campaign is over, at the convention.

Obama walks up to Bill and says,

"Man, I feel sorry for you. I only campaigned against her, I couldn't imagine living with her."

And laughing.

Jerk.

I really don't want to believe this of him, especially when I started out such a fan. But he has demonstrated that he is capable of acting like this, I can only hope he experiences some reflections after PR, and tries to rectify his mistakes.

Though I still won't vote for him.

Make the Secret Service boys stay outside.

And wear the big, heavy rings.

If he's spent this campaign season defining the two of them as thugs, well then, it's a hard-knock life for you, Dave....
