Obama to stop defense of DOMA
After two years of defending the Defense of Marriage Act, Obama has changed course.
This reversal was, according to items like the linked NYT article, motivated by pressure from within the administration, including from the DOJ.
Obama has not, evidently, dropped his personal opposition to gay marriage, which he has suggested is because "God's in the mix" (among various other explanations).
No doubt, this move will be met with howls of protests from Democrats who'd insisted that Obama had no lawful choice but to vigorously defend DADT in court against the Log Cabin Republicans' attempts to declare it unconstitutional. Certainly, they'll be horrified to see Obama wantonly break that inviolable law over DOMA, no?
Anyway, it's painfully rare that anything good comes this administration, but this is one.
