NOW Namby-Pambies In

More horrors from MadamaB's mailbox: NOW has weighed in on the Health Insurance Reform Bill. Here's the action they're pushing:

Please send a message to your senators and House member asking them to assure that restrictive abortion language in health care reform legislation be withdrawn, that a strong public plan is included, that age discrimination is removed, that better cost control measures are included and insurance is made truly more affordable for everyone.

Or what, NOW? You're going to cuddle them to death? You're going to stop saying "pretty please?"

I am so tired of these women's organizations not having the ovaries to say,

"You know what? This bill is punitive to women. We are organizations that fight for justice FOR WOMEN. So, we cannot support this bill. We urge all our members to fight to kill the bill and start over."

Why would any woman support this bill, knowing that if it passes, insurance coverage she has paid for with her own money could be taken away because some uptight men in dresses are afraid of her having full control of her ladyparts? Knowing that the bill could cost her, and her sisters, her livelihood and/or her life?

The excuse that it will increase coverage is just an excuse. It forces people to buy coverage that sucks and does not regulate costs in any meaningful way. So, the cost of the sucky coverage will go up and up, and people will just decide not to buy it. As letsgetitdone said, more people will die because of this legislation than they would have if nothing were done at all.

I am deeply disappointed in NOW. Where, oh where, are the Shirley Chisholms and the Mary Dalys of the present? (R.I.P. Mary, and thanks to gob and Violet for pointing her out to me.)
