NARAL, National Abortion Rights Action League, announced that it is endorsing Obama.
Sen. Obama has said, "A woman’s ability to decide how many children to have and when, without interference from the government, is one of the most fundamental rights we possess. It is not just an issue of choice, but equality and opportunity for all women."
Further, I believe Sen. Obama is going to be the Democratic nominee. He leads in pledged delegates, superdelegates, the popular vote, and cash-on-hand. As a former elected official, I know that having the three “m’s” of a campaign - money, message and manpower (or womanpower!) - are how we win elections. Sen. Obama will be our next president.
Actually, there's only one "m" Nancy Keenan cares most about--money.
In all fairness I should say that I'm not totally surprised. NARAL, under Nancy Keenan's leadership, long ago lost its credibility in defending a woman's right to choose.
NARAL has made really boneheaded political moves, such as not showing up to fight Samuel Alito's confirmation to SCOTUS, endorsing Joe Lieberman over Ned Lamont, and not coming out solidly against Sam Brownback's "Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act," which was totally based on junk science.
WKJM
is calling this endorsement "a key get by any measure." Ben Smith at Politico says it's another sign that the party is coalescing around Obama.
Sigh.
UPDATE FWIW, this comment was posted over at Taylor Marsh's site:
I just got off the phone with NARAL NY. They said that it was the National NARAL office that endorsed Oblique without consulting with ANY of their affiliates. Here is a statement they issued this morning:
May 14, 2008 Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President. This decision was made internally by NARAL Pro-Choice America, based in Washington D.C., and without the consultation of the NARAL state affiliates across the country. NARAL Pro-Choice New York will not be issuing an endorsement at this time. NARAL Pro-Choice New York believes that this endorsement in the Democratic primary is premature. We are fortunate to have two pro-choice candidates in Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Senator Barack Obama. When a nominee is named, NARAL Pro-Choice New York will stand proudly with the pro-choice Democratic candidate in order to defeat anti-choice Republican candidate John McCain in November.
This makes sense. NARAL endorsed Joe Lieberman without consulting the Connecticut NARAL affiliate:
Local Connecticut NARAL head Carolyn Treiss is well aware of the limitations of Joe Lieberman and his positions with regard to reproductive rights -- his comment telling rape victims to take a "short ride" if they want emergency contraception was no doubt one of the factors (along with his critical cloture vote for the ragingly anti-choice Samuel Alito) that led her to buck the national organization and vote for Ned Lamont when she was a delegate to the CT Democratic Convention in May of this year. She then went on to join Conncticut Choice Voice, an organization of pro-choice women supporting Ned Lamont and vigorously opposing Joe Lieberman for the lipservice he pays to women's issues that he quickly abandons whenever it's crunch time.
Nancy Keenan, on the other hand, went out of her way to defy local Connecticut choice groups and give the national NARAL endorsement to Lieberman.

Who made the decision?
Was in by polling their membership, a vote among their board of directors, of did Keenan make the decision on her own?

It was NARAL's PAC
According to news reports, "Officials said NARAL's political committee board was about evenly divided among Clinton and Obama supporters and that the decision to endorse was hard fought. Ultimately, the board voted unanimously to support the Illinois senator."
While Keenan doesn't make decisions alone, the national organization has overruled the state organizations as in the Lieberman endorsement. I can't wait to read Jane Hamsher's reaction at FireDogLake.
NARAL Sucks
and not because it endorsed Barack Obama. I've been done with them at least since the Alito cave.

NARAL, MoveOn, Unions
They are all pissing away their credibility this cycle.
What ticks me off (as a former Teamster/union guy--had to pay the bills in college) is that the SEIU is about to throw $75 million to get health care for all, but they endorsed the candidate who doesn't find universal health care a priority. all that union dues down the crapper.
Off topic
but perhaps you can summarize for me what the beef the California nurses have with SEIU. I've seen ads all over the place.
like a hostile takeover--
about staffing & membership-- -- SEIU has been aggressively trying to get nurses to switch unions, and not always in proper ways.
Court orders SEIU members to stay away from nurses union organizers -- http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...
basically it's like a hostile takeover, with SEIU trying to kill the CNA.
Thanks
Much appreciated.
anytime--
i'm glad i found that link--i had no clue just how far SEIU was going--way way too far in my book. And it's sad when a union doesn't use their contract successes or their accomplishments but instead uses intimidation and other stuff.
They should be selling it that they could do more for nurses -- but they aren't.
not all unions tho--

NARAL Pissed Away Its Credibility Long Ago
when an organization is dedicated solely to protecting reproductive rights doesn't fight the confirmation of Samuel Alito, it's gone very far off the rails. More interested in being players in the Village
than protecting my rights.

Someone doesn't agree

National Women's Political Caucus is disappointed in NARAL's endorsement.

Nothing from FDL...
I was on a thread at FDL earlier regarding the Childers win when the NARAL news came out. The comments were in thirds - some thought it a good move, some had no beef with it, and some (like myself) threw up in my mouth a little bit.
How NARAL can endorse someone *other* than the strongest pro-choice candidate in the race is waaaayyyy beyond me. I know the politics of it - the stupid politics of it I mean - but if a one-issue organization does not endorse one of the strongest champions of That.One.Issue, then what the hell credibility could they have left?
Anyone who gives money, time or effort to NARAL should really think long and hard about continuing.
Still nothing from Jane at FDL. I'm sure she's very busy but I thought this was her wheelhouse issue.
I thought so too
She really hammered NARAL for supporting both Lieberman and Chafee, not fighting Sam Alito, and basically sitting on their hands after having raised buckets of money.
Ahhh Tweety
Not to mention that Tweety just called Joan Walsh "John" Walsh at least two times...
Fuck Olbermann
Not sure why I even torture myself anymore. What a disgusting POS.

I wish I could threaten to withhold contributions, but I already did that when they endorsed Senator Short-Ride.
