My hatred for Windoze is as a million burning suns

You know, installing updates... "Do not turn off your computer"... 1% progress every minute or so... Dies at 27% with no message... After the machine doesn't spontaneously reboot, heart in mouth, I restart it. It works, with no notice of what's been changed.
What a creepy, stressful, and deeply insulting experience. Why do people put up with it?
The dominance of Windows has to explain a lot about the neo-liberal dominance since the mid-70s, but I don't know how.

It's not like Apple's any better, of course.
OS X is a breeze to use, but Apple's draconian practices in other areas, not to mention their disapproval of third party modifications, sours me on the company as a whole.
I'm thinking of moving back to a base-Windows machine and installing Ubuntu, as Bruce Dixon recommended.
Ubuntu is not as slick as the Mac....
.... but I've used it a lot, and it's very acceptable, and not at all the hideous botch that Windows is.
That said, the last time I upgraded I destroyed my monitor's drivers, so I'm not sure it's good to stay on Ubuntu's bleeding edge.
For almost a year now I've used Bodhi Linux....
It's based on Ubuntu, not the bleeding edge, but less bloat. Bodhi uses the Englightenment desktop, which takes a bit of getting used to, but is lighter on resources, for older machines, than any Gnome or KDE version, and visually quite stunning. Worth checking out at http://bodhlinux.com
