If Clinton actually makes progress on this front from her Senatorial seat, I'll offer 50% forgiveness for the sin of being a centrist Democrat. I was in NYC for a few months until recently, and I have at least two things to say on that front:

1. The subway system and all the other train systems are absolutely wonderful and where the country should try to go.

2. The subway system is in horrendous disrepair and I don't see how much longer it can last.

We've been trying for all too long to get attention to mass transit in NYC.

What is wonderful about HRC's statement is that she ties it into bigger battles.

The MTA will survive, somehow. We'll do better with US Senate attention. Even better with the framing HRC gave us here.

What's sad is the lack of attention this issue has got from our senior Senator.

HRC for Senate Majority Leader!

we're owed money from DC and from Albany for all our infrastructure (and for our NYC schools, and health and -- everything).

...so many other parts of the US, including DC itself, are very much owed a massive investment in transit infrastructure.

but we give more than we get--both to DC and to Albany. That's not true for many other places/cities/urban areas.

...the same problem exists in Toronto where new subway lines are desperately needed, but provincial and federal governments generally use Toronto as a cash cow. This despite that Toronto itself is the capital of Ontario, so Toronto is owing itself a lot of transit money.

My city of Ottawa is struggling, the national capital, is struggling to build its own rail transit network, but it has been stymied largely due to the strange intersection between federal and local politics that exists there. Namely, local politicians elected to the federal level have used their influence to grind their axes against the local government, and some local politicians love to shoot themselves in the foot.

i like Ottawa--i spent 4 days there 2 winters ago--i even went iceskating on that canal too!

i loved it! (but it was bitter cold)

: >

(Toronto always bores me--Montreal i love enormously tho and try to get there every other year or so--i could live there easily--if i only spoke French)

at the risk of duplication... is that she loves her some mass transit.

And she says so in no uncertain terms.

If she did nothing else, I'd be in love. But she goes beyond...

For those of us who live in urban areas, the junior senator from ny just got our vote no joke...

In a thread here, a few days ago. I'm glad Hillary is getting this rolling in the Senate, but so much more needs to be done. This issue has been bugging me in particular concerning the presidential race, because this is almost certainly a Democratic president would help. Here in Michigan, Detroit is signing up to get its first rail mass transit lines in decades, something the city desperately needs, especially considering its the largest metropolitan area in the country without local rail mass tranist. And, it's going to involve funding from the national government, of course. It's going to be like hell trying to get a transit bill through a president McCain's office minus a super-majority in the Senate, which just isn't going to happen, so this is really agonizing, to me.

absolutely. That is why it seemed so appropriate to me to post on it on the anniversary of 9/11. Even formidable Mayor Mike hasn't managed to pry from Bush the promised funds to pay for the aftermath - that's not even to mention the lack of attention to NO after Katrina. Bush loved to capitalize on our loss but had no intention to use government to help us through it - just to implement his "invade your country" agenda.

NYC resents being used as a hostage this way, for the record.
