Man whose campaign destroyed Bill Clinton's reputation to allow him chance to repair it

vastleft's picture

(by publicly praising the candidate whose campaign rode dirty on him).

msnbc.com headline: "Bill Clinton to speak at Democratic Convention — Speaking role offered by Obama campaign to end tensions, NBC reports."

It's like a fairy tale come true, isn't it? And it will end all the tensions! Woo-hoo!

By letting the Big Dog re-establish himself as a party leader, I feel that Obama is reaching out to voters like me!

As to those avid Clinton supporters who still haven't warmed up to him and may even resent him, Obama said, "We're not talking to those people, we're talking directly to the Clinton campaign people and staff."

Oh....

and not to "those people."

Maybe I'm just a little-oversenstive at this point, but there are so many misconceptions buried in that statement I can't begin to untangle them. A little mirroring, I think -- he seems to think that talking to Clinton is the same as talking to her supporters. It isn't.

That was precisely the attitude they had. They had Unity events in Misogyny, NH or wherever it was, and they got a bunch of career politicians lined up behind the presumptive nominee and that was that.

As long as they had enough bodies in place for the Unity photo-ops, their work was done. How much interest did they have in outreach to PUMA types, listening to their concerns? A big fat zero. Times infinity.

"those heavy gloves built into the wall" are used to handle harmful, toxic or radioactive substances.

Yes, that's an entirely appropriate metaphor for what's happening in the FKD.

Of course they won't do much good when the containment chamber explodes later this month or in November.

Obama's disparaging remarks about what Clinton had said ("its not about catharthis...")

the guy is completely clueless. Not only is he directly contradicting Clinton (and telling her he doesn't give a fuck about her) he's insulting those (or should I say "those people") who support her....

this statement suggests to me that he's the driving force behind keeping Clinton's name off the ballot -- that he's The One who wants to be the ONLY one, and that he thinks he deserves to be nominated by acclamation.

Submitted by lambert on

MSNBC:

Obama said his team and Clinton’s team were working out details about whether she’d be placed in nomination: “I don’t think we’re looking for catharsis. I think what we are looking for is energy and excitement about the prospects of changing this country, and I think that people who supported a whole range of different candidates during the primaries are going to come out of that convention feeling absolutely determined that we have to take the White House back.”

A "whole range of different candidates"... Ouch!

And I think this the link VL wants, not the one he gave.

No elitism here in speaking to the press the general public reads, eh? "Catharsis?"

Didn't we all study Greek at our private schools?
Wiki (sorry): "Catharsis (????????) is a Greek word meaning "purification" or "cleansing" derived from the ancient Greek infinitive ????????? transliterated as kathairein "to purify, purge," and adjective katharos "pure or clean" (ancient and modern Greek: ???????)."

And we especially don't want any of this:

"The term in drama refers to a sudden emotional climax that evokes overwhelming feelings of great sorrow, pity, laughter or any other extreme change in emotion, resulting in restoration, renewal and revitalization in members of the audience."

Did Obama misspeak?

When I complain about his elitism, it's not that I want a yokel for president. I want someone who respects his constituents and his legitimate opposition. Riding on the whole "creative class" thing and pissing on blue collar voters who didn't love him, that's the elitism I'm complaining about.

It is, though, unfortunate that he doesn't want us to have a catharsis.

And Jonathan Alter is freaked at the possibility of Hillary putting on "a Greek drama":

http://www.newsweek.com/id/151388

Alter's piece may be a classic in its genre, putting every Democrat in the worst possible light, and even borrowing and playing Maureen Dowd's "Obambi" card. Good thing that Obama used this golden moment to protect, defend, and grow the Democratic brand!

Check the link VL gives. He says Hillary's planning a catharsis, when (check the vid) what she said is that it's human nature to want one, and the party will come out more unified if there is one.

They suck. Why do I even bother?

It reminds me of an Obama supporter who kept telling my boyfriend he should support Obama because it would be good for Hillary (she'd get more if her supporters fell in line) and so she would be happy. To which boyfriend pointed out that while he admired and respected Hillary, he didn't support Hillary's candidacy for president because he thought being president would make Hillary happy. He doesn't really care if Hillary is happy, he doesn't actually know her. What he cares about are ISSUES and what Obama would do on those issues. The Obama guy seemed not to really get that even after the explanation.

I keep going back to what she said about the treatment of women by the party. You name me one other constutency the party would treat this way. You think it ever crossed anyone's mind to deny Jesse Jackson a roll call vote? Do you think they'd deny the first hispanic to win a presidential primary a roll call vote? Hell no because they'd be worried these groups wouldn't show up at the polls in November and with good reason. No other group would be expected to eat this shit and then be good little girls.

But, hey, it's no big deal that Hillary Clinton is the first woman to win a presidential primary. Is the first woman to win a caucus. Nope, any woman could do it. It's just a coincidence that nobody ever has. Hey, if there were a glass ceiling for women in politics, there would've been sexism in the primary and god knows we didn't see any of that. So no biggie. Nothing to celebrate or acknowledge here. Move along.

The absolute necessity to deny any acknowledgement of sexism or women's struggles for political equality is unbelievable.

Would we not call such a party that all of a sudden refused to follow long-established tradition when a member of a group finally wins a primary, let alone the greatest number of votes in party history, one entrenched with intolerance or hate towards that particular group? Especially, when it's totally unnecessary in determining the outcome? I mean, even if Obama was an egotistical maniac the fact that she's a "first" should trump any hyper-sensitivity by Camp Obama or DNC asshats.

Even Jon Fuckin' Stewart joined the (all-too-convenient) ignorance train last night when he ridiculed HRC and her supporters who dared to ask for equal treatment. He distorts this basic plea, suggesting she's asking the DNC nominate her instead.

I must add that neither Obama nor the DNC would dare pull such a stunt if there was any political payback. No other group would tolerate this but yet women are backing Obama by big margins.

no Teddy in 80, or Jesse, or Hart, or Brown, or anyone--the media rarely if ever brings up that every single second-place finisher (and third and fourth, etc) in the past ALL got to be placed in nomination and received delegates from states.

And they also never mention just how close it was this time--which actually is a first.

And generally all of the primary candidates who win delegates (remember that "pledged to vote for on the first ballot stuff"?) are on the roll call, along with "favorite sons" from various states.

But I guess all of that info has been shoved down the memory hole now, and someday I'll really love Obama. I hope the queue for room 101 isn't too long.

That's what we've been told, right?

The other argument is that HRC now supports Obama and has asked her supporters to do the same ever since her concession speech.

To which my reply is that at that very same speech, she said she wanted the people who voted for her to be respected and the issues she brought to the forefront to be addressed... I haven't seen anything on either front so far.

So, I'll do number 1 (support) when I see number 2 (respect for "those people", I guess, and promotion of issues).

Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath.

Don't you all just love how, in the eyes of the OFB and its leader, "unity" is nothing something you work towards, "unity" is simply something that happens?

Yes, "Unity" really is just a place in New Hampshire. "Unity" really is just a string of photo-ops and political kabuki? Really, they tell us, why do we need healing when there is nothing left to heal?

This is the same thing that bothered me about Senator Obama's candidacy from the get go. There is nothing to work for or towards, things "just happen". All you have to do is confess allegiance to the movement, believe here, pray there, and hope over here, and everything will "just happen."

It's all so maddening for me. The religious overtones to his campaign are a complete turn-off, for me. The "movement" doesn't necessarily have to ultimately do or believe in anything. Simply being apart of the "movement" seems to be an end in itself.

But, to get back to "directly", it never ceases to amaze me that he feels that Hillary's supporters are a lost caused, but seems to be absolutely enamored with negotiating with, and trying to win over, Republicans and conservatives.

... that Obama wants to govern from the center right, and the Dem leadership wants to throw not only Hillary but her supporters out of the party, it will all fall into place and you won't be amazed at all. (It's the only model I've ever been able to come up with that accounts for what they're doing.)
