Hi lambert. A few weeks ago I jumped into a thread on the NYT photos. I started here but it took an interesteing turn when I mentioned highway deaths. I specifically wrote "I'm not saying we shouldn't have them or restrict them, but let's face it - that's a lot of deaths" but I absolutely could not get anyone there to acknowledge that. They either wrote things like "without accepting risk in our lives, we cannot live" or cited statistics about the reduction in deaths. It's a typically hairy comment thread so keeping up with the part I was involved in is hard at times, but if you have a few minutes have a look. And next time the subject comes up see if you can get the one(s) you're talking to to even admit that yes, that's a lot of deaths on the highways. I was very surprised by the responses I got.

Mundane shit just doesn't sell so we must focus on Hollywood-type visuals accidents, catastrophes. Think about the demos, man! Obvious exception: actual, no-holds-barred reporting of the hellish reality that is the Iraq occupation. Talk about booorrriiing! "News" must be entertaining and void of all seriousness!
