Letter From the Future

MJS's picture

how did things go in '08?
did you save the earth?
did children all get health care?
did you find what life is worth?

were you likened to a traitor
because you asked questions?
did you keep on training soldiers
to kill and kill again?

were your votes all of them counted
or did they stop you at the polls?
did you try to live so freely
but in the end did you diebold?

(chorus)
i hope you got this letter
i hope you read it twice
i hope things for you got better
better is so nice
so very, very nice

did your meat all die in terror?
was it filled with toxic waste?
were the grains all patented
and genetically debased?

did your homes have happy families
filled with love and hope?
or did many just sit empty
was everybody broke?

did you keep on having children?
more than you could afford?
did you need a lot of shoppers
to buy junk down at the store?

(chorus)
i hope you got this letter
i hope you read it twice
i hope things for you got better
better is so nice
so very, very nice

did you burn up all the oil?
did you fire all the coal?
did you sift among the embers
to try and warm your soul?

did you think that life was easy?
that it was hide and seek?
did you stare at your computer
or go for hikes up by the creek?

did god come down from heaven
and punish those who sinned?
did god do it with a straight face
or with an evil grin?

(chorus)
i hope you got this letter
i hope you read it twice
i hope things for you got better
better is so nice
so very, very nice

did you lose your sense of humor
did you laugh at all the lies?
did you weep for those who suffer
because their lands were occupied?

did everyone try to tell you
how and what to think?
did you stare right at the future
and refuse to even blink?

did you treat a stranger kindly
did you offer up your heart?
did you think that maybe inside
was the place you had to start?

(chorus)
i hope you got this letter
i hope you read it twice
i hope things for you got better
better is so nice
so very, very nice

how did things go in '08?
did you save the earth?

I always like reading your stuff, it's like when I put on a pair of worn jeans and find money stuffed in the pocket.

I haven't the skill to produce words like this. Very nice indeed.

Doubt we'll save the earth in '08. But we might start the process. I suspect it'll take more than a few years to get things going in the right direction.

And having said that, it's time to go out and start getting the herb garden prepped for the season. The seasonal greenhouse prep is almost done, and soon it'll be full of little seedlings. The goats are heavy with kids, ready to give birth in another couple weeks. The sun is shining and there are white puffy clouds out there. Things can look good even in the dark of looming economic troubles, a stupid war, and changing political fortunes.

Sima: There is much to be delighted by! One of the challenges for people who pay attention to political and social ills is to not lose one's "garden" in the bargain. I have friends who have left the city and now have a small farm (with three goats and chickens on the way) near woods and creeks: they have never been covered in more mud nor their smiles so wide.

intranets: back when I bartended there were times I would come across wads of cash (still in my pants' pockets at wash time) and never once did it displease me! So, high praise indeed!
