If you have "no place to go," come here!

Let's pre-write the "progressive" response to Obama's SOTU

vastleft's picture

I don't recommend that anyone read, say, Democratic Underground during or after Obama's State of the Union address and take a swig each time you encounter a comment like these:

* I'm proud of my President
* He's hitting it out of the park
* I'm just glad not to be looking at shrub's ugly face
* The teabaggers' heads just exploded
* I love my President
* I doubted him for a guilty second, but now I see he's in it to win it
* Take that, you Obama bashers!
* Less than I wanted, but he inherited a train wreck from Bush
* He's smarter than the rest of us

At more-sophisticated sites, one can expect:

* Less than I wanted, but the mid-terms are coming up, and all that matters is electing more Democrats (and a couple of over-hyped and probably ineffective primary challenges). Send money now!
* Let's hope this signals more resolve
* One or two of these promises sound really good (and let's act like they're credible)
* Let's fixate on the Republican response.

What else...?

As a liberal, and someone who has a critical genetic component that allows me to hear BS when others hear dazzling and soaring rhetoric whenever Obama opens his mouth, I have a feeling that most of what he says will be inspiring the following responses from me:

* Uh, I don’t think so.

* On what Planet?

* AYFKM? (Are You Fucking Kidding Me?)

* If only…

* Whatever.

* Dude, just how dumb do you think we are?

That is, if I can bring myself to watch - still deciding if I want to throw away a good hour or more of my time.

It took Bush til 2005, before he was banned from my TV. And, BTW, damn you Obama, for PUTTING HIM ON MY TV AGAIN!!

Obama didn't make it through 2008. I'll read the transcript

marginally better, as I can "hear" Obama via the written word just as I could "hear" Bush: tone, cadence, inflection, facial expressions, body language - the whole nine yards.

But, at least I won't have to sit through the phony applause, the adoring gazes between Barack and Michelle, and put up with all the attendant ritual...

he was banned before he even "won" the nomination!

I'll probably read the transcript too. I am fascinated to see if any of what's going on will change his delivery and/or content.

And everytime that damn Haiti commercial comes on with W and Clinton, my partner, at the end of W's speaking part, does his trademark laugh "A-heh-heh".

I was so looking forward to never having to hear that again.

The impersonator at the Jeff Foxworthy Comedy Central Roast was absolutely priceless.

over the last 2 weeks I have noticed a new OFB talking point, cry babies, from FDL, to TPM, to the always reliable Booman, Obama's critics are cry babies. Because the OFB does not know the considerable difference between a cry for justice to cry babies.

sad
just plain sad

--It's all stupid Coakley's fault

Also, not sure if these are entirely independent from points above but:

-- He's only been in office a year!

-- Deep down in his heart, I know he wants to do the right thing!

"Brilliant! He's playing 11-D chess, while everyone else is playing 1-D checkers!"

1. "He's only been President a year."

2. "Wait 'til he does something."
