Lessig Tossing His Hat in the Ring

chicago dyke's picture

Lessig wants your attention and money for CA-12. I admit I don't know much about this guy, but everyone around the progblog universe is chatting him up, so there it is. More and better, and all that.

The other Democrat is an experience state senator and proponent of single-payer

my preference would be for netroots to stay out of it, but that is just me

I never expected to see Lessig being promoted here after his "Why I'm Voting for Obama" video which savaged Clinton unmercilessly. It was pretty good and spoke powerful logical arguments to geeks online on the dangers of Clinton. Sadly, I think Larry is too smart for politics.

"Creative Commons"

On content, the guy seems good and creative.

Unlike some web sites, we have a catholicity of opinion...

thanks I learned a new vocab word today. Never seen it used as such. (I need to read more)

...before the rise of the Oborg the predominant view at this site was (and remains, unless I'm wrong) that the Clintons were really sucking up to the corporate mainline over issues like the War.

We are stuck with two moderately conservative people contending for the Democratic nomination. Neither will halt the war machine. Both seem inclined towards more progressively liberal social policies than the Republicans.

The difference is in who many feel will actually do the most good. Or the least bad.

Lambert, for example, thinks the Clintons will. Leah thinks Obama will. IMHO the difference may not be statistically significant, but either will do much better than that old reptile McCain.

And police (or anyone else) still have no business using tasers on people, either. Just sayin'.

and the seat, and other people's money.

Jackie Speier (watch that spelling, "e-i-e" like Old McDonald's Farm) is a good, solid, serious, strong and capable progressive with a long and productive legislative record, and this seat is hers. For Lessig it's a vanity run, Mr. Academia takes a vacation trip out into the real world; probably good for him, nothing like a butt-whipping to sharpen up your flabby theoreticals.

S-p-e-i-e-r, and if the netroots had any common sense they'd have been loving all over her already. This is yet another pissing away of resources and energy that would be better spent anywhere else. Dumb is what it is.

So Lessig is jumping in against Speier at the last minute?

Lovely. Lessig has no experience in electoral politics, and he's running against a good democrat with a proven track record who's paid her dues. And he has the good taste to wait until Lantos past away and the seat was open. Speier was running a primary challenge against Lantos from the get-go, you know, back when it was hard.

Wait, this is starting to sound like another race...

If Lessig had been in the race when Lantos was still defending it, I'd have more sympathy for him, but this just sounds like egotistical opportunism on his part.

Dr. Lessig? You want to get into national politics? Run a primary challenge against Dianne Feinstein. That office is big enough to flatter your ego, hard enough to show you earned it if you win, and Feinstein is *not* a good democrat.

... on this one, though not automatically.

I liked Lessig because on IP issues he'd be very strong, and that strikes at corporate dominance of content creation (and thence at our famously free press).

But if he's being parachuted in by the same "creative class" that just happily fucked me over on universal health care...

So now that the space has opened up with Lantos's death, this "creative class" get a guy with little political experience to challenge a more experienced woman, who, not for nothing, had been willing to fight the good fight before it opened up?

Terrific optics right now for a split party. But then whenever I've read any discussion of the creative class bullshit, I notice that woman are generally missing from any discussion of how it can join with minority groups to form a new majority. You know, it really would be much easier to just work out a majority that seeks to include the one block that is actually the majority.

"No harm, no foul"

OK, sorry, if the story is as told then it never should have happened and Deputy Dumb needs to have his toys taken away.

But if you're up for another taser, ah, discussion there is more to talk about and I'd be up for it, ever so gently and with great propriety.

Is that there are lots of "creative" people outside the tiny little fraction of people who consider themselves in that class.

The house always wins. The house in the village. Or the house in the forest. Whichever....

Can be found here in this article, which also notes Lessig's potential run -

I can see why Jackie Speier would need to be challenged, she has a reputation as a fighter for consumer rights and says her priorities in Congress would be ending the War in Iraq and expanding access to healthcare.

And she has an incredibly compelling (or tragic, if you prefer) personal story - she was an aide to Congressman Ryan and was shot five times in the Jonestown attack that killed him AND her husband was killed while she was pregnant with her second child.

.....why we won't pay working class folks enough to survive.

By plugging the 'creative class' into their corporate computers 8hrs a day we can manage the toiling masses in countries where slavery and environmental destruction are the norm.

I got all excited for a moment about Lessig and wanted to post about him. I planned to use his video which is more than just ok. But.....

Lessig put it out on Blip TV....Blip 'We are the coolest of assholes' TV not only would not let me register with my screen name, it has a '.' in it but you cannot embed this super-cool 'creative class' crap into a WordPress blog as you can YouTube....YOUTUBE WHICH HAPPENS TO BE THE FUKING STANDARD MR. INTERNET GENIUS LESSIG. Honestly if Obama and this clown get into office they'll end up shooting themselves in their so, so intellectual 'foot' every week.

People should realize that it's not just wankers like Boosh who are incompetent shoots off the diseased tree of American aristocracy.
