If you have "no place to go," come here!

Kick Down, Kiss Up has Limits. Maybe

The dynamic that created the Brexit vote is also at work in the US. That shouldn't be a shock. It is what drove both the Trump phenomenon (fascist anti-immigrant xenophobia), and what drove the Sanders campaign (rejection of neo-liberal, status quo, financial globalization).

Ian Welsh has probably best described Brexit, in a series of posts. Not just that one.

Since 1976 a lot of Britons who do not live in London (or not the nicer parts) have been doing very badly. The economy is trash if you aren’t connected to the various London money spigots because Britain insisted on de-industrializing. So, we have a very large number of people who have done very badly for 40 years. They were given an opportunity to vote against the status quo, and they did so.

Now, I am going to tell you a very big secret. It’s a secret that the great sages and the sensible people have been telling humanity for thousands of years.
The secret of living in a good society is leaving no one behind.

Sshhhhh. Actually, scream it to the wind, because no one will believe you. We think that being assholes and hurting people and making their lives miserable then saying “vote for more of this if you know what’s good for you” is the secret to prosperity.

The unelected bureaucrats running the EU are lickspittle toadies of the financial elite. That is why they bail out criminal banksters, and mandate austerity programs (eat shit and die soon, proles) as the means to transfer that wealth to their pals. But the problem is, that while the EU itself isn't a democracy, the member countries are. And if you kick the proles long enough, they are liable to react in unpredictable ways. And it is true that self-harm will be a part of this. Young people in Europe who were hoping to live in an open society where they could travel and live and work where they wanted are denied that opportunity. That is going to happen and it is a bad thing.

But there is also an opportunity for good, and it requires changing the narrative from "xenophobic hate-mongers rejecting multi-cultural societies", to "The 99% need to be treated like human beings".

And that is why it is more important than ever to not allow rightwing asshole tropes and sources and propaganda anywhere fucking near this debate.*

So, ZERO FUCKING TOLERANCE on that shit!

* Do we really have to explain that yet again?

Unfortunately, the former still seems to be the preferred narrative among the Serious People. It's as though they've learned nothing from all the Occupy and other protests here and in Europe, the Sanders campaign, and now the "Brexit" vote. I think it's because when people don't want to learn something, it takes a long time even when the lesson is simple.
