Keep a Weather Eye Out

Sarah's picture

Tornadoes on the ground here in my hometown today. Night before last a lot of damage in Clovis, NM. It's springtime in Texas, and March Madness is the new weather radar wars... y'all keep safe, okay?

Tom Skilling on WGN-Chicago has been on this for a month and a half now, and I haven't heard anybody else mention it. Last two years have been dominated by a "weak El Nino" state in the equatorial Pacific. This switched over--almost instantaneously, and apparently unexpectedly--to a strong La Nina.

Thus we're getting this strong southern jet stream which just refuses to budge. Here in TN we've got trees about halfway leafed out already which normally doesn't happen until the middle of April. You've got storm fronts in west Texas, and the jet arcs up in a typical wave shape to peak out around north central Illinois, then dumps back down over Indiana leading to the rain that just won't quit, producing floods.

gonna be a hell of a year to try to make predictions. One thing's for sure, the hurricane umbrella that kept storms out of the Gulf last year has been folded up and put away. Of course I'm sure this has nothing to do with the ugly insurance-refused-or-premiums-skyrocketing stories out of the Gulf and East Coast we've suddenly started hearing again....
