Incredible! Protester wears anti-war T-shirt to Bush speech without getting thrown out, beaten, or arrested

[Welcome, FDL readers!]

Bush protest tee shirt Pablo Martinez Monsivais ap-thumbNow that's news. What's happening to this country?! Baltimore Sun:

Bush aides and campaigns have well-deserved reputations for screening people [or strip-searching them, or making them sign loyalty oaths] who get into the president's events to make sure protesters don't get in. And when they've managed to slip into an event in the past, they usually were quickly ushered out. [Or thrown out by party operatives posing as Secret Service agents. Or beaten. Or jailed.]

All of which makes it remarkable that a woman named Sherry Wolfe was able to get into, and apparently allowed to stay in, a Bush appearance in Lancaster, Pa. today at which he spoke to the local chamber of commerce about fiscal discipline.

Hilarity ensued, but here's how the T-shirt read:

Wolfe wore a white t-shirt with the stark message on its front: "GEORGE BUSH, YOUR WAR KILLED MY FRIEND'S SON." The back said: "BRENT ADAMS KILLED DEC. 1, 2005, RAMADI IRAQ."

Good for Sherry. More like this, please.

And what's come over the man? What angle is he working now?

And oddly, or not, WaPo's stenographer didn't mention it. Nor did the world's greatest newspaper (not). Guess Sherry showed insufficient Civility in the presence of Dear Leader.

NOTE I wanted to add a link about the woman who got beaten at the Republican National Convention (or links to other beatings at Partei events) but couldn't lay my hand on one. Readers?

The event was well attended by lawyers who may have been able to smell the money that repugathugs would have to pay for their actions should they pull their.. umm.. how do you say it? while we all may know what it is (!)well children would get punished if they said it. LOL and thus the repugathugs disliking the smell of clean coming from decent people were unable to force themselves to reveal themselves in this case, and the exception that proves the rule that in the republic of america you get assaulted for free speech but in the United States you still have some rights and I guess that means Lancaster is inthe US and Not the Republic of america , YOU GO LANCASTER.

Hi, I'm Sherry Wolfe, the protestor who wore the t-shirt to a Bush event in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,Oct. 3, 2007.I am responding because it seems there is a theory appearing on a few blogs that I was in collusion with the Bush Camp, that they staged it to polish their image, and I was not really a protestor.Total baloney.I am most definitely real ,and most certainly not working for George Bush's goons. For those wondering if the President saw me wearing the shirt; YES INDEED he was looking right at me as I took off my blazer , then unbuttoned and removed my blouse revealing the t-shirt. I was so close I saw his eyes move up and down reading the words. My friend ,Gerry Beane was sitting next to me and was chosen to ask the first question. The opportunity was
PERFECT, so as Gerry stood up to talk and the cameras focused and the crowd turned to listen to him...BINGO. After the shirt was exposed I kept my hand on my cell phone ready to hit the number of my attorney, in case I got hauled out of there.( I was actually stunned that I managed to make it through 3 security checkpoints. Even though I had a valid pass, I figured the secret service would scan the guest list and block me ,seeing as I have been involved in many anti-war events. )Well after I made it inside everything unfolded so smoothly it was surreal.I am a member of the Lancaster Coalition for Peace and Justice. We are a small group, but we are VERY organized.A legal team was in place , we completely anticipated that once that t-shirt was visible, I would most certainly be removed and arrested. To my knowledge no protestor has ever managed to stay, so I was in shock, on auto pilot when I realized what was occuring. Because Bush had just finished expounding on religion and prayer and forgiveness; telling the crowd "Christian values were his first priority", ( yeah, right ...sure George ... you make a better stand up comedian than President of the United States.) Here's why they refrained from tackling me:It was a very small Town Hall setting. All the seats were in very close proximity to the Pres. I was about 20 feet away from him, in the second row of the left hand bleachers. The Nickel Mines Amish families who lost children in the school house shooting last year, were lined up ,sitting in front row vip seats .We figured he didn't want to look like a hypocrite in front of them, ( even though he is one), and drag a woman out of the room, after trying to impress the crowd with his "good 'ol boy-homespun-regular-heck-of-nice-guy " spin. There was no way they could have discreetly removed me . So, the secret service crowded in a corner near me,most likely in a panic. But as Gerry was talking they cut his mike and for the duration of the meeting ,WGAL, the local news station did not broadcast video of us or much of the crowd. Just kept the camera on Bush. What a laugh ! Security had no idea if there were more people planted in the audience. The snooty members of the Chamber of Commerce were seething. Afterwards,as the reporters swamped me, a woman ran up and started ranting and raving, getting in my face, saying we need to be in Iraq. She made a fool of herself. They had been so proud to meet their esteemed dictator .Apparently I had spoiled the lovefest. Just wanted to share these details, but please remember
this action at the Chamber of Commerce Bush Town Hall Meeting was not
about me. The imperative was to hand deliver a letter from a good friend
whose son Brent Adams died under mysterious circumstances in Ramadi
Iraq, Dec.1, 2005. The family has had no co-operation from the military ,and
wants and DESERVES answers, and some measure of closure.
Not only was the letter given to Bush, the White House called the Adams
family 3 hours after the meeting, saying the president had read the letter, and is ordering an
investigation into the death of Brent.
(We will keep the pressure on to make sure he keeps his promise.)
If wearing a t-shirt that most guests attending the meeting considered obnoxious, then
so be it. You do what it takes to get the necessary attention of the
press, hence the attention of the President.
I pray in the future the Adams family finds some peace of mind, if that is even possible. God bless them.

I think what you did and how you did it was obnoxious and disrespectful to our leader, the president. No matter who the person is at the time, he is our president. Have some respect! I can't believe people are actually commending you. You are definitely completely in the dark as to why we are in this war in the first place. Yes, it is sad that people are dying because of it. This has effected me also. But its not Bush's war, its all of ours. Don't forget about 911. It seems like so many have.

You are commendable. And true, the reason you weren't removed most likely is that it would have been too ugly even for this very ugly executive branch.

Thank you for your actions, and I hope that your friend's family finally gets some answers (and hopefully honest ones).

...and at the very least, I do not want to be "anonymous coward." Again, Sherry, thanks for your efforts.

Welcome to our salty-languaged but (I hope) diverse and interesting blog.

And thank you for your service to the country, as others have said. Looks like second time was the charm. You also write:

This looks like a story to look into...

If you go to WHP page on the net you can see the video and story that aired last evening at 11:00 p.m. regarding what was in the letter to the President and the actions taken thus far to find out why Major General Rick Lynch told CNN and the American people that no one was killed in Ramadi, Iraq in 12/1/05 in his newscast on 12/2/05.
Sherry - thank you for doing what you did for this family to get this ball rolling and hopefully get some answers to the question that have remained unanswered for close to 2 years now.

I commend Sherry Wolfe, and every other person working to find out the truth about the deaths of US Armed Forces service members.
We waste too many lives in Iraq.
We waste our future.
We waste our time.
We waste our treasure.
We waste our military.
We waste our blood.
We must stop.

is who she appears to be from that post, "effected" may be the word she wants.

Not because she was affected by 11SEP01.

Not because she is affected by the war.

Not because she has any regret for the loss of (largely brown or disposably non-wealthy) life.

Because she is the effect of the attack, or of its aftermath, or of the endless repetitive whinery about how it changed everything.

I have not forgotten. I don't believe any of the Fellows have.

Hello again. First of all thank you for the kind words. To those of you who aren't pleased, well, you just don't get it and you never will.Just like the woman at the Town Hall meeting who came up to me, got in my face and started screaming, while reporters were talking to me, I was quiet and did not respond to her. I will not
lower myself to your level by name calling. Bush supporters who get red-faced, with forehead veins bulging while they are spewing angry expletives , are well...GEEZ..just not attractive. Now , here is some NEW IMPORTANT INFORMATION that is DISGRACEFUL : Before Bush's public Town Meeting, he met privately with 3 local families of fallen soldiers. There are 4 families in our area, including the family of Brent Adams. But the Adams family was excluded, and not invited to speak with Bush. The other families are Bush supporters, and since Bill Adams does not approve of this Administration he was conveniently left out. Local news reported that a mother who met privately with Bush said, " the President cried. In fact he told me I made HIM feel better. " Please, give me a break ! Bush is a liar.We all know it.And if he was a MAN instead of a COWARD, he would have met privately with Bill Adams, and let him speak his mind. It was a private situation, no media. A reporter from the New York times is looking into the matter.I want this information made public. One soldier's life is no less valuable because of the political opinion of his parents.
Just when you thought Bush & Co. couldn't possibly sink any lower...

Lambert, your phrase " second time was the charm ", referring to the " Smoketown Six " incident in the summer of 2004. Tritan Egolf was a friend of mine and my daughter and I were right beside the guys when they executed that imaginative and hilarious bit of street theater, re-creating the pyramid at Abu Grahib .( Unfortunately the State Police and angry mob of George W. devotees didn't quite share our sense of humor...)My daughter and I were also witnesses in the trial and civil lawsuit which ensued. Tristan was a brilliant author, musician and activist. His death was a great loss.I and many others miss him deeply. Yes, Conservative
little Lancaster is not as Red it seems....

Hello Lambert,
you requested I contact you, but the yahoo address you listed , came up as invalid when I sent a message. Then I clicked on the contact form at the top of the page , but it said I was " denied access" What's up ? Must say I love your site ! That article titled " Incredible! ....Protestor not thrown out, beaten or arrested " was hilarious !
I must admit I have never posted on blogs before. I just felt I had to respond to the flurry of online buzz regarding my Bush encounter.

as well as your class. bush is a COWARD. mmmm, that works for me, i think we should use it more. after years and years of pointless, criminal war, and he's still too much of a sniveling, whining, self-important baby to meet with the "wrong" families. whatever.

my own family has had several opportunities to meet bush (not me of course, but my relatives) and they have passed. basically, no one trusts themselves not to lose their tempers if actually in his presence. rather than risk the rough up by the SS and local goons, they've passed on the "privilege." good for you sherry, for finding a way to confront him that he cannot avoid. it's the one thing in his life he almost never has to suffer.

Ack, it was late. I should have said:

lambert_strether[dot]corrente[at]yahoo[dot]com (replacing [dot] with the a period, [at] with the at-sign, and it also would have helped if I'd given my right name.

And the contact form was access denied because I'd closed it to all but users who were logged in (since otherwise it filled up with spam). But I opened it up, so you can use that.

And I love the human pyramid!
