If you have "no place to go," come here!

Imperial privilege

One of the great headlines of our time: "Exclusive: Secret Service Bragged About Protecting Obama While Partying At Colombian Brothel." This is actually a pretty good piece of reporting, since they talked to the locals and there's some ground truth to it. These two details caught my eye:

Partying at the "Pley Club" Wednesday night, eleven members of the president's advance team allegedly bragged "we work for Obama" and "we're here to protect him."

Leaving aside the great job they did of "protecting" Obama from a public relations standpont, it's almost as if the Secret Service regards itself as part of an imperial garrison, isn't it? And:

The police have since been directed by U.S. authorities not to comment on that night or the scandal surrounding the Secret Service, according to a senior police official in Cartagena.

Savor that. The Columbian authorities are "directed" by U.S. authorities (rather like the Brits being directed to supply the DHS with information on their citizens flying directly from the UK to Canada, and not through the US). It's almost like we're running an empire, or sumpin.

Anyhow, from my uber-jaundiced perspective, the whole thing is a clusterfuck of the first water, and if the Republicans don't start beating the "family values" drum on this, that tells us -- if we didn't already know it -- that the 2012 election really isn't serious. (And Issa, who seems to be taking point on this, has a history of talking big and saying nothing. After all, Solyndra was Issa's biggest ginned up scandal, and he calls himself a Republican? Where are the televised hearings? The criminal charges? The impeachment?)

UPDATE Look! Over there! Hillary Clinton! It gets transparent after awhile, doesn't it?
