Gov. Peter Shumlin delivered his third inaugural address Thursday, but disruptions were aplenty, as single-payer health care protesters entered the House chamber on multiple occasions.

Oh wow, I didn't even know that Vermont had nixed their single payer plan.

Not surprising. Trying to enact single payer in a country whose government does everything in its powers to ensure no price controls (over lousy hospital charges, drug prices, etc) is pretty impossible.

Not even a teensy bit surprised.

Never mind. Judging by leaked details of the Vermont plan, it was "single payer" like Obamacare is "universal health care". A ballot initiative might be the only way to get an actual single-payer plan in place. And even if you could do it, I doubt if single-payer would be workable at the state level in the U.S.

I'd like to be wrong about that, but the cynic in me says that the Obamacare provision that allows for state by state trials is only there as a political pressure-relief valve anyway. Not intended to actually let anything better happen.
