Gitmo: Gift that keeps on giving

Invictus has the details, but the "Camp Delta" torture policy from Guantanamo Bay has been posted online now. It's breathtakingly unadorned, and if a USAF commanding officer is willing to put a signature on this ... silk-wrapped excrement ... then impeachment is far too mild a fate for Bush, Cheney and their cohort of criminals, for not only have they destroyed our armed forces with their calumny, they have dishonored our officers and enlisted corps with their viciousness.

Those of you who ever took a Spec Ops prep course or "escape extend and evade" course (aka SERE school) may recognize some of the techniques approved for use on the detainees in this official policy. The memo includes limits on how the detainees were to be treated, and appears to suggest that supervision of interrogation teams would be maintained. What is NOT widely known is these were based on techniques reported to have failed when used on US pilots -- men like John McCain and Gary Powers.

For those of you who doubt that this is torture, kneel on the floor, leaning back but not sitting back on your heels, with your arms at shoulder height, palms up and fingers outspread, and see if you can stay there ten minutes without experiencing "severe discomfort."

Slapping people, stripping people, denying them personal hygiene (bathing, toilet paper, etc.) ... what has happened to our country? What are we teaching our children, and our young servicemembers, we stand for?

We're not the good guys.

I went through SERE, and experienced some of the techniques described. It's unpleasant but tolerable when you know you'll stop being abused as a POW in 3 days or when you're just getting interrogated for 5 minutes in a class. That training is supposed to prepare you for what the bad guys do. I can't imaging the psychological impact of living months and years like that, not knowing when or if you'll ever be released, and knowing that there's no line they won't cross. When we starting acting like the bad guys, in more ways than just our treatment of prisoners, and once I realized that these weren't the actions of isolated zealots, I decided to completely sever my ties to the military. As far as these unconscionable actions are concerned there is nothing separating us from any other violent and oppressive regime that's soiled its nation, and I'd no more serve this regime than I would those.

Good for you!

No, not isolated incidents. My personally belief is that most everything was videotaped or recorded, and then circulated in the Beltway like pr0n. Someday, I have to write that post...
