Okay, smartypants, answer this one: if it's camouflage how come I can still see them?

George W. Bush, aka The Man Who Would Be King was embraced by the people of Albania with the kind of touchy-feely love often reserved for leper healers. But what is Albania? Well, for starters, it's a place Albanians sing about!

Posted below are translated lyrics to Himni i Flamurit/Himni Kombëtar, the national anthem of Albania:

United around the flag,
With one desire and one goal,
Let us pledge our word of honour
To fight for our salvation

Only he who is a born traitor
Averts from the struggle.
He who is brave is not daunted,
But falls - a martyr to the cause.

With arms in hand we shall remain,
To guard our fatherland round about.
Our rights we will not bequeath,
Enemies have no place here.

For the Lord Himself has said,
That nations vanish from the earth,
But Albania shall live on,
Because for her, it is for her that we fight.

Give a patriotic listen here.

Another version of the lyrics (in Albanian and English) can be found here.

Melody of the Albanian National Anthem, sans lyrics, can be heard here.

Albanian Anthem Recap: God and war, martyrs to the cause, other nations vanish but Albania hangs in there!

Seems a natural fit that Martyrs to the Albanian cause gots to love George W. Bush, our very own Jesusattva. Love Him and Despair!

Really the lyrics to their anthem? Wow.

In fairness - they received Bush the way they did because of the Clinton administration's actions in reversing the ethnic cleansing of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo; remember, a million of them were driven from their homes within a couple of weeks, and were forced to encamp on the border of Albania. Both Kosovo and Albania supported America in Iraq; I believe they even sent one or two soldiers to help.

Interestingly, Bush never made much of that support, even though it came from two Muslim countries, which you would have thought they might want to exploit; but that would have been to remind everyone of a limited military response that actually worked to achieve the limited goals it was meant to achieve.

Albanians could be viewed as among History's major losers, through little fault of their own, which helps explain the strange defeatism and martyrdom that their anthem is drenched in - which makes the fit with Bush even more perfect.

Who else but you, MJS, would have noticed this wonderful irony?
