The knitting Olympics are upon us so hopefully I will have more soon. (I know you're always saying we need more knitting posts. I do have a really nice tube top I'm almost done with that I promise to post. It's GORGEOUS.)

... not because of the subject line, but because I would like our knitting threads (yarns?) to be as rich and variegated as our gardening threads.

But does crochet count? (I'm not much of a knitter.)

These mittens are adorable, though. I'm thinking of making some for myself. :)

Though no need to ask me -- just post!

However, as with the gardening posts, it's not just the end result that matters, but sharing the process and the decision making and the techniques, too.

about 12 weeks ago, and she took up crocheting. She's done at least half a dozen hats, an equal number of slippers (some felted), a large shawl, many hotpads and assorted other things. All left-handed, which apparently is harder since most instructions are right-handed.

I'm thinking of buying a bunch of steel wool to see if she'll do a car for me.

steel wool is for weaving.

You'll have to whittle her a loom.

but I am lost about where or how to start. Winters here in western Oregon are kind of wet, so knitting does have appeal as a useful indoor activity. Plus, I could make Christmas presents.

So, is there a good book or any other source of instruction for an inept beginner? I should note that when I was a child my grandma tried to teach me to knit, but I was impatient and usually ended up throwing the yarn across the room and running outside.

learned from the Stitch 'n' Bitch book. I suggest going to a local knit night (local yarn shops usually have them) and see if anyone would like to give you lessons if you don't have friends who do it or taking a class at said yarn shop (most have them).

I've noticed that if you have the basic knit and purl stitches pretty much down but are having a little trouble people at knit nights are more then happy to help!

You're welcome. Good luck. I'm gonna try and do some more "how to" stuff with my knitting posts too so that may help.
