Tuesday is "garbage day" when I transport the garbage can(s) down to the end of the county road. Only today, imagine my surprise when there was no garbage can.
Tracking the wily container, I came upon a sample of bear scat roughly the size of my size 11 tennies (I did not, however, step in it to get a more accurate measurement).
The scat was located in a clear area where we normally burn in the spring. Technically it's surrounded by woods if you go far enough in any direction, but I don't think it qualifies as "in the woods" as such.
I also learned that bears don't respond to credit card offers or Obama campaign solicitations (although the latter may be evidence that the can was dragged by a PUMA and not a bear).
I found the can about 100 yds from the house, right on the property line, meaning I had no excuse to tell the neighbors they should clean up the pile of garbage on their property. But it was a nice day.
Next I plan to prove conclusively that the Pope is not Catholic, and that A does not equal A (to the disappointment of Objectivists everywhere).
He loved them cuz they grew so big, such great results from seeds. The first seeds are easy for a child to plant, since they're big, not like carrot seeds.
Then once the sunflowers flower, you get to watch the flower "faces" following the sun during the course of the day. East in the morning, south in the early afternoon, and west in the late afternoon, early evening.
And in the fall they grow heavy with seeds, and the faces turn downward with the weight.
Then you get to collect the seeds if you like, for next year.
that is the coolest thing about sunflowers, i agree. when you think about the 'mechanics' of how a plant can move, over the course of the day, it's pretty awesome. yet another reason i don't need religion; so much in this universe is naturally mysterious and kewl, and inspires all the awe one needs to feel elevated and transcendent.
