Ends-Justify-Means, Craven US Strategy re Russia & Syria
I knew Obama was not sincere in any humanitarian intentions in Syria.
I knew Obama would not work with Russia to bring peace to Syria. Instead the Obama administration is doing all it can to demonize Russia re the Ukraine situation and re Sochi Olympics and the gay issue. The corporate media, of course, is obliging. Doing all it can also to discredit Russia.
Thierry Meyssan in “After Yugoslavia, Ukraine?” writes:
Public opinion in Western Europe is wrong to regard the Ukrainian crisis as a showdown between Westerners and Russians. In reality, Washington’s goal is not to push the country into the arms of the European Union, but to deprive Russia of its historical partners. To do this, the United States is prepared to ignite a new civil war on the continent.
Washington’s strategy in Ukraine would appear to be a combination of proven "color revolution" recipes with others recently concocted during the "Arab Spring". Moreover, the United States makes no effort to hide it: it dispatched two officials, Victoria Nuland (deputy to John Kerry) and John McCain (who is not only a Republican senator, but also the chairman of IRI, the Republican branch of the NED) to support the protesters. Unlike Libya and Syria, Washington does not have jihadists on hand to sow chaos (except for Tatar extremists, but they are only located in Crimea). It was therefore decided to lean on the Nazis with whom the State Department worked against the Soviets and has organized in political parties since independence.
Al Qaeda and Nazis? What on earth am I talking about? Yes, I know. WTF? But they are frenemies of amoral US military strategy. It is hard for me to message these truths because it is so hard to wrap one’s American heart and mind around them, my own included. One fights to begin to believe such a surreal scenario. But in the game of hegemonic militarism, the HORRIFIC BUT HYPOCRITICALLY SPUN ENDS JUSTIFY THE HORRIFIC HYPOCRITICALLY SPUN MEANS!!!
Human and social rights for gay people is a profound issue, no argument. But we must stay aware that the Obama administration and its allied cronies like to cherry pick where and when they support human and social rights issues and will zealously enable those countries at times which are perpetrators of civil and military crimes against humanity as well as committing them themselves. Our corporate-status-quo pimped out media will gloss over inconsistencies on the part of our government and allied governments to enable mass violence-inducing heart-of-darkness hypocrisy.
As Margaret Kimberley asserts in “Boycott America, Not Russia” Obama is personally boycotting the Winter Olympics in Russia, but he and Washington have no trouble providing “arms, aid and diplomatic protection to some of the most homophobic regimes on earth.” Kimberley maintains that there are at least ten allies of the US that have anti-gay laws fare harsher than Russia’s She writes: “Saudi Arabia, America’s partner in international crime, actually executes people because they are gay.”
Obama’s real issue with Russia is that Russia has criticized American imperialism. Russia has given sanctuary to Edward Snowden. Russia interfered to prevent a U.S. attack on Syria. Also, the game of divide up and conquer re destabilization, started long before Obama entered stage RIGHT, of the Ukraine.
The Obama regime and the corporate media know that they must twist reality to keep the fantasy of the benign Obama alive in the eyes of the citizenry. American lesser evilism? Let’s keep playing this game. On a world scale. Let's get desperate and earnest rebels of other countries to even buy it.
Martin Luther King asserted that the United States, yes, before Obama, was the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. Obama sure ain’t altering that reality.
Paul Craig Roberts in “Russia Under Attack” writes:
... Washington is gunning for Russia. Russia is under attack, and if Russians do not realize this, they are history.
Many Russians are asleep at the switch, but the Izborsk Club is trying to wake them up. In an article (February 12) in the Russian weekly Zavtra, strategic and military experts warned that the Western use of protests to overturn the decision of the Ukraine government not to join the European Union had produced a situation in which a coup by fascist elements was a possibly. Such a coup would result in a fratricidal war in Ukraine and would constitute a serious “strategic threat to the Russian Federation.”
A fratricidal war catalyzed by fascist elements. Including Nazi elements. But that is okay with the US and its allies, since the ends justify the means, remember. Weakening of Russia as payoff. If we can ally temporarily and covertly with Al Qaeda in Syria, why not Neo-Nazis in the Ukraine?
Roberts goes on:
... Washington is the perpetrator of the crisis in Ukraine and intends to take over Ukraine .... It is a perfect plan for destabilizing Russia and for negating Putin’s successful diplomacy in preventing US military attack on Syria and Iran. Essentially, if Washington succeeds in Ukraine, Russia would be eliminated as a constraint on US world hegemony, Only China would remain.
Alternatively, the Russian Army could occupy western Ukraine while arrangements are made to partition Ukraine, which until recently was part of Russia for 200 years. It is certain that the majority of residents in eastern Ukraine prefer Russia to the EU. It is even possible that the brainwashed elements in the western half might stop foaming at the mouth long enough to comprehend that being in US/EU hands means being looted as per Latvia and Greece.
I am outlining the least dangerous outcomes of the crisis that Washington and its stupid European puppet states have created, not making recommendations to Russia. The worst outcome is a dangerous war. If the Russians sit on their hands, the situation will become unbearable for them. As Ukraine moves toward NATO membership and suppression of the Russian population, the Russian government will have to attack Ukraine and overthrown the foreign regime or surrender to the Americans. The likely outcome of the audacious strategic threat with which Washington is confronting Russia would be nuclear war.
Pepe Escobar in “The New US-Russia Cold War” declares that for over two decades Washington has invested $5 billion in the “democratization” of the Ukraine. Escobar writes:
We can interpret what's goin' on now as a remix of the 2004 Orange Revolution. But The Big Picture goes way back - from NATO's expansion in the 1990s to American NGOs trying to destabilize Russia, NATO's flirt with Georgia, and those missile defense schemes so close to Russian borders.
In already trademark Obama administration style, the State Department's support for anti-Russia, pro-EU protests in Ukraine qualifies as "leading from behind" (remember Libya?)
It comes complete with "humanitarian" appeal, calls for "reconciliation" and good against evil dichotomy masking a drive towards regime change. Abandon all hope to find voices of sanity on US corporate media ...
Here the "strategy" clearly reveals itself as a US puppet now - coup or no coup - instead of an EU puppet later. No one in the Beltway gives a damn that Viktor Yanukovich was legally elected president of Ukraine, and that he had full authority to reject a dodgy deal with the EU.
And no one in the Beltway cares that the protests are now being led by Pravy Sektor (Right Sector) - a nasty collection of fascists, football hooligans, ultra-nationalists and all sorts of unsavory neo-Nazi elements; the Ukrainian equivalents of Bandar Bush's jihadis in Syria.
Yet the US "strategy" rules that street protests should lead to regime change. It applies to the Ukraine, but it does not apply to Thailand.
Washington wants regime change in the Ukraine for one reason only; in the wider New Great Game in Eurasia context, that would be the rough equivalent of Texas defecting from the US and becoming a Russian ally.
In “US escalates Syrian Intervention” Bill Van Auken points out that Obama and the West insist on regime change in Syria. Non-negotiable, the hell with the general welfare of the entire population of Syria. Does it matter to the Obama administration what the majority of Syrians want? It sure as hell doesn’t matter to it what the majority of Americans want. Or what the majority of citizens of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan wanted? Even now what the MAJORITY of citizens of the Ukraine want no matter what our corporate media presently declares.
I keep thinking of Westmoreland’s infamous quote of long ago, “We had to destroy the village in order to save it."
They had to destroy the Middle East (on to Africa soon) in order to SAVE it!
Save it for American and our fellow thug-allies INTERESTS. Economic interests of the one percenters, of course. The predatory, reptilian ruling rich in which psychopathic priorities matter over humanitarian welfare. Profits over people. Disaster capitalism. Encouragement of chaos. Destabilization on steroids thanks to craven and covert gamesmanship and infiltration. Let’s take earnest and rebellious against authority foreign peoples and enable them to weaken a government, coax them to trust outside enabling by powerful foreign countries like us, not to enhance the welfare of these peoples but to weasel-y use them as leverage for ultimate hegemony. Better they are serfs to the US-allies overlords than the “other” ones. The sickening New World Order of Hitlerian proportions buried beneath the fog of media putting white, good guy humanitarian hats once again on US and allied aggressors.
The convenient Al Qaeda elements in Syria who are ferociously weakening the Assad government as well as killing and displacing thousands and thousands of innocent residents of Syria, no matter how they feel about the Assad regime. Do you believe the bullshit of the US intending to and being able to support just the good “rebels”? Especially when our allies like Saudi Arabia are pouring money into the darkest elements of opposition there.
ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS. Our country’s leadership is dark and amoral.
According to Van Auken Saudi Arabia is shipping sophisticated weaponry, shoulder-fired surface to air missiles to the “rebels” which again include savage jihadist fighters. The US is now paying salaries (over $3 million worth) to the ENTIRE “rebel” front along the Southern border of Syria with Jordan. We are paying for foreign mercenaries to bring down a government that we are not officially at war with. In fact, one we are pretending to play a broker of peace for and with. Yeah, the same kind of broker disingenuousness we use for the Palestinian/Israeli struggle.
Van Auken reveals that in Jordan there is a permanent base for Syrian military intervention by the US and its allied thugs. The Wall Street Journal reports that in Jordan’s Amman there is a “military operations room” staffed by officials from 11 countries that form a “Friends of Syria” group, including US, Saudi Arabia, France and UK. Do you think they are there out of humanitarian concern? There’s a bridge I’d like to sell you between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Obama recently flew to California to discuss Syria with Jordan’s King Abdullah II. According to Van Auken Obama promised Abdullah $1 billion in loan guarantees and $600 million in US financial and military aid. In return Washington gets to use Jordan to launch aggressive strikes from.
It makes one sick as our government takes food stamps away from America’s children to enable the destruction of Syria’s children.
Five months ago Washington made false claims of chemical weapons attacks by the Syrian government. Most of America still believes that propaganda though it has been refuted. The American people don’t want a war with Syria. The British people do not either. That is why Russia’s proposal to help negotiating chemical disarmament in Syria had traction. But it didn’t convert the Obama administration and other NATO powers to a real commitment to peace. Just to bide their time and continue to hide their imperialistic agenda behind propagandized humanitarianism.
Three years of war in Syria have brought about massive destruction and suffering. We are not innocents in all this. The Obama administration and the CIA and its allies have enabled with money and weaponry and intelligence to topple a government that it has economic and political interests in toppling, and a good part of that is preliminary toppling of this country to enable them to topple Iran and then Russia. Wow. This is nothing about national security. This is about aggressive hegemony. And stoking the fires of civil war and promoting foreign mercenaries to enter said civil war and ensure ever-widening military conflagration and chaos.
Samantha Power, now US ambassador to the UN, is what Van Auken calls the point person for propaganda. She dramatically cites the victims of the Assad government while omitting the savagery and devastation from the “rebel” forces which of course include Al Qaeda-linked militias which the US says out of one side of its mouth it is concerned about and the other side should be enabled to fight the Assad forces and even offers to join in said common goal. Ends justify the means weasel-dom on steroids. Once again, Power is asking that the UN endorse military intervention on the part of the US. Look how lovely that turned out for Libya or before that Yugoslavia!
Van Auken writes:
The third pretext was indicated by Obama himself, who suggested that stepped-up military operations against Syria were needed to promote peace. “There will,” he said, “be some intermediate steps that we can take to exercise more pressure on the Assad government… to try to move forward on a diplomatic solution.” This is patent nonsense. Washington ensured that the Geneva talks were never more than a charade, with its hand-picked “opposition,” representing nothing more than the intelligence agencies that pay them, demanding that the Assad regime hand over the reins of power.
Behind all of these pretexts lies the drive by US imperialism to assert its hegemony over the oil-rich Middle East and weaken its rivals—Iran, Russia and China—by employing militarist threats and actions that pose the danger of a regional and even global conflagration.
Obama’s bullshit about “intermediate steps” of violence to promote peace. How slick and craven! Geneva is a charade. Demonization of Russia now helps the cover-up of absolute betrayal by the US and its allies concerning engineering REAL peace in Syria.
Obama is now courting France to step up its willingness to get militarily aggressive in Syria and Africa. Just like Israel courted the US to take aggressive actions in the Middle East.
Obama knows that the US people are war weary. That is why he relies on the weasliest of all recourses, his craven use of drones. Will they begin their pretend-precision attacks in Syria as Melkulangara Bhadrakumar suggests in “Obama Revistis Military Option on Syria.” For the sake of regime change while pretending to take out Al Qaeda leaders?
We have a lot to worry about as citizens of the US and this world community. Thanks to propaganda from the US administration and the corporate media how few of us will all this grim, realpolitik truth actually reach and how few of us will be willing to believe it?
