I mean a girl could get behind wearing a nice frock, if Don Draper were the ad man evaluating her assets.

But Donny Deutsch.

Donny Deutsch?

[*snort*]

He must be kidding.

The sad part about this is that the GOP just might advise her to wear higher skirts, to show what a heck-of-a-gal she is....

has also been talking about sexism in our culture and how Democrats seemed determined to lose this election by refusing to reign it in. You should read all of his pieces, but here's a bit of the latest (links omitted):

That brings us to Sarah Palin. Again, I can't stand the woman's politics. But the spectacle that is unfolding is simply extraordinary. Not just heads are exploding, but entire solar systems. And this time, the explosions are on the liberal side. This reaction to Sarah Palin, especially when connected to the reaction to Hillary Clinton, should make one point indisputable: the deeply embedded cultural loathing of women affects virtually everyone. Political labels are no protection against hatred of this kind, hatred that imbues every aspect of our lives. With regard to issues of sexuality, I often feel I can only make the point in one way. Forgive the crudeness, but when it comes to questions of masculinity, femininity and sexuality in general, we are completely, perhaps irretrievably, fundamentally, comprehensively fucked up. There is barely a sane word to be heard from any quarter. We are a godawful, calamitous, catastrophic mess.

[Snip]

Democrats and Obama supporters in general better wise up fast. I could make "Gunning to Lose" into a series of indeterminately great length at this rate. People are going to be voting against not just Olbermann, but against Kamiya and a host of others. But always remember: Women are evil. The hatred and the deeply unhinged quality of the attacks on Palin, as on Clinton, all proceed from that.

So many people, so completely undone by the presence of women in politics, especially at the national level. It's quite the spectacle. I'm out of words for the moment, so I'll end here.

What makes this so devastating to Democrats is that they absolutely need Obama to win women by a good-sized margin with a large turnout. Trotting out their inner misogynists is a terrible way to do that, not that any of them seem capable of helping themselves. It also tends to alienate a smaller, but important part of the Democratic base and that's gay voters since so much homophobia is so tied to sexism and gender roles. As I've said, it's not so much that liberal women will flock to McCain as it is that enough independent and moderate women will be disgusted enough by Democrats to vote McCain and liberal women will be too depressed to bother to vote.

It's the glee with which they indulge in this that just knocks me out, the sense of utter freedom without even a twinge of a hint of awareness that they're doing/saying something even a tiny bit naughty.

And the women enablers who you'd think would know better are something else again. Jeralyn has a post up at TL tonight to the effect that the "lipstick on a pig" thing is Palin's fault because of her "pitbull with lipstick" crack. No awareness that it's blaming the victim, which they wouldn't stand for in other circumstances.

I also honestly never in my pretty long years ever got before what the Republicans were talking about when they would castigate "eastern liberal elitists." I was blind. This election, even before Palin but especially since, has brought that out into high relief, and I'm ashamed I never really saw it before.

I guess on the up side, I now have a better idea why so many folks "vote against their economic interests," as the saying goes, and understanding is always good. But I'm seeing not the slightest sign that the Dem. Party and its leadership has still the slightest clue.

As the other saying goes, we're doomed.

I'm glad I'm close to retirement age (not that I can probably ever afford to retire) and live in the country, where, contrary to my own Eastern elitist upbringing stereotype, women are not looked down on and are treated entirely as equals by these hard-working, poorly-educated farm men.

Damn.

I watched a few seconds, and then had to stop. I have decided to ignore the Presidential, may not be the most responsible thing to do, but best for my mental health.

...if Donny would do this same segment if he were talking about a male politician?

Really, this thing is getting more depressing by the day.
