MARJAH, Afghanistan - A U.S. general hailed "a very historical day, a new beginning" Thursday, as an Afghan flag was raised over the former Taliban stronghold of Marjah and troops began mopping up the last pockets of resistance.

With U.S. Marine snipers posted on roofs of surrounding buildings, a crowd of several hundred residents watched as Mohammad Gulab Mangal, governor of Helmand province, raised the green, red and black flag, AFP reported.

Resisters "mopped up," U.S. snipers everywhere — it smells like... Camelot!
