Detroit a new benchmark for elected Kleptocrats

Rainbow Girl's picture

Mayor Bloomberg "warns" New York City (it's future mayor) that -- basically -- if union contracts are not significantly shredded in the next round (city workers have been working w/o a contract for 4 years), then NYC will have missed a huge opportunity not to become Detroit

I'm still not clear what he means, because Detroit did not devolve into a looted wasteland because unions were doing so well. Unions in Detroit have been decimated for quite some time having something to do with secular trends like the destruction of the US auto industry by NAFTA. Bloomberg just wants to get his grubby looting hands on all that pension money that's -- in his view -- just sitting there waiting to be grabbed by him and his looting cronies. What a disgrace this man is. A monument to mendacity and cruelty.

You say:

Bingo!

This is the new America--brought to us by corporatist Dems and Repubs.

There will be absolutely NO MORE REDISTRIBUTION in the good ol' US of A, by George!

Watch
--their defined benefit pensions will be replaced with either 401K's or Tom Harkin's newfangled USA Retirement Plan (it is a NOT a defined benefit plan).

BTW--where are the public employees' unions?

Is that "chirping crickets" I hear?

The honchos of the employee unions (at least in an area I am familiar with) are so compromised, their only "negotiating" consists of doing what Obama does: ask the Mayor how much he wants and they give him double. Well, not quite. What's happening more and more is the current unionship sells out the young, and future generations. A pretty clear example of "I've got mine, screw you." Even if the people they are selling out (less health care, less pension, less work protection, etc etc) may well turn out to be their sons, daughters, wives, husbands, nephews and nieces.

Everyone is cannibalizing whoever they can in this damn society. I guess this is what austerity looks like. Rabid, hungry, scared dogs everywhere looking for prey.
